I really enjoyed reading As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. The characters in the novel are absurd in that they would carry a dead body in the hot weather over long distances and not mind the smell. I found it interesting that Allie’s family were not able to smell the rotting corpse when it apparently is foul to everyone else around. Faulkner also presents an interesting yet complex relationships between the family members: the father puts up a mourning facade as his wife passes away but in reality, he is very distant and his relationship with Allie was never intimate; Allie’s son Cash desperately tries to gain Allie’s affection by doing what he thought was normal, building her coffin right outside her window for her to see that he loves her); Allie secretly loved Jewel the most because he was the only child that wasn’t her current husband’s child. And what I thought was most fascinating was that each family member secretly wanted to go to town for their own personal gain but they said they’d bring Allie’s body to town to pay their respects.
