(11/4) I can explain the human impact on China's geography and its impact on its development.

China's people depend on the Yangtze River to trade goods in the interior of the country. It connects the inside with the coast. The Three Gorges Dam is being built to increase shipping on the Yangtze River and decrease flooding in certain areas. It will also create a huge reservoir displacing many people and animals. Terrace farming is when humans dig into the side of a hill or mountain to create flat farmland. This is a huge advantage because China lacks farmland. Pollution is a major issue in China. Manufacturing makes it the second largest producer of greenhouse gas in the world. A lack of government regulation and people's wants causes acid rain and polluted rivers.

The population density is higher (260 people per square mile+) in the East of China because it is warmer than the West of China. The climate change is caused by the Himalayas. China's population will decline partly because China's one-child policy has reduced it. A large retired population and a small working population causes economic decline because the retired population consumes resources but does not work.

Will China replace the U.S. as the world's premier superpower?

China has a much larger pollution problem than the US because they are the world's second largest producer of greenhouse gas. The population will rapidly decline, decreasing the population of the working class. China has gone from dynasties to democracy to communism. The growing economy is somewhat capitalistic with SEZs. The government is communist, allows few freedoms, and has much censorship. Most people are not religious, but there is Confucianism, Legalism, Buddhism, and Taoism. China trades with the US. They control Tibet. Hong Kong and Macau are part of China but have their own economic and government systems.

Various dynasties rose and fell in early Chinese history. When it lost the Opium Wars in 1840, Europe was allowed to claim Chinese land, causing rebellion. The 1912 Chinese Revolution ended dynasties. The Republic of China attempted to be democratic under Sun Yat-Sen, its first president, but the government was corrupt and caused a civil war between the Nationalists (for capitalism and democracy under Chiang Kai-shek) and the Communists (for a communist economy and a totalitarian government under Mao Zedong. The Communists won. The Great Leap forward tried to increase industry and agriculture by creating communes. It failed. During the Cultural Revolution, Mao tried to strengthen Communism by punishing those who disagreed with him. This created distrust among the people. Deng Xiaoping made the economic system more capitalistic by creating Special Economic Zones, but the government was still authoritarian. On June 4, 1989, students protested at Tinananmen Square. It became violent, and the government did not change. Today, China is ruled by a Communist party that allows few freedoms. It is an economic superpower.

Mao Zedong wanted to make China economically self-sufficient by controlling the economy. Both the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution failed, harming the country. After his death, China was opened up to the rest of the world. Special Economic Zones (SEZs), such as Shenzhen, were set up to encourage foreign trade starting in 1979. These cities are more capitalistic than the rest of China. China has grown economically, and many people have better standards of living. However, the increasing gap between the rich and the poor is causing unrest, and there are poor migrant workers that sometimes turn to crime. McDonalds and hat shops are present in China.
SEZs are a strength for China's economy because businesses have the freedom to control why, who, where, and when to sell products in them, the GDP has grown to the second largest in the world, there is increased foreign trade, more items are sold and traded, there are millions of new jobs, and standards of living are increased.
