Let's watch this video to get to know a little bit about our author, David Bowels. The video is called "Reflecting Our World with David Bowles | Shake Up Your Shelves." As you listen to the video, take notes of some of the points Bowels makes about the importance of having a diverse library and the effect it can have on children. After watching the video, you will reflect on Bowles's statements and determine if you agree with him or not and why.

Our next novel, They Call Me Guero, is written in verse. Which is a fancy way of saying that it is written as poetry. Even though the novel is written in verse it still tells a narrative or story. So each of the poems can be read separately or together, and when read together, they tell the story of Guero.

As we watch this video, make note of some of the examples of what poetry is or is not.

Spoken Word poetry is a form of poetry that is also performance. Authors choose to write and perform their works as Spoken Word poetry for many reasons. Spoken Word poetry allows the author control over how the poem is read, the rhythm, and emphasis of words or sections. It is another way for them to express and share their art.

There are several Spoken Word poetry competitions for young adults where the prize is often a scholarship. Young adults from all backgrounds compete in state and national competitions sharing their art and getting their voices heard. Spoken Word poetry can be done as an individual or a group. Spoken Word poetry is highly emotional form of writing and performance.

While we watch/listen to this performance, think about what the poem is about and why the author wrote/performed it.

I agree with Bowles's statement about the importance of diversity in children's literature because children's need to learn and to accept how they are to not feel bad about themselves and to go forward and that is what a book will need to show a diversity literature for kids to show their life but show them how have their life good. Also to not be bother by bad things that happend around them in real life. One thing he sates in the video that I agree with is that the books of school are the the shelf's that shake the kids in a good way.The reason why is because most of the books on the school is things that make kids to kinda changes how kids are because the books of school are about thing or statements that talks or gives good advice's to the kids reading the book.

One thing that makes rhythm because everything haves a rhythm a feeling has a rhythm a song also is a poem by its rhythm, rhythm is what makes a poem the sounds also makes that rhythm so that way most of us say that the rhythm is what makes a poem.Without it,it is not a poem or it is different because then the poem will not make sense, people would not understand it,it will not be fun or something the people could also express of.The format of the writing is different from our other novels because a poem most of the time is short or one word because one word can make you express through it also because it talks more about people feelings,it rhythms and it sound like you can sing it and is like is a song. The novels we read it doesn't express people feelings it talks more about people troubles and what happend and to say how they feel they just say sad but the writing talks about the trouble but through the trouble they express their feelings with a rhythm. An example of how the writing is different is when their was a a writing that said Me,We.

According to this video, what makes a poem a poem and why?
One thing that makes a poem is that it involves intense feelings because it tells you the Joy, Fear, Sadness, the madness and much more that it is being told in front of you. Without it, it is not a poem or it is different because it doesn't express the feelings that were written down to make me feel something while reading it.
How is this format of writing - a novel in verse - different from the other types of texts we have read this year?
The format of the writing is different from our other novels because it is written in italic or in cursive letting you know that it is a poem.
