The first verse talks a bout a black man in a shotgun house. The shotgun house an idea brought to New Orleans by the Africans and Haitians. In the mid 20th century, the shotgun house became a symbol of poverty and are not considered important in historical records.

Likewise, the second verse talks about a man how was raised with so much patriotism. However, we see that this upbringing is not beneficial in adulthood because they are raised with unrealistic expectations of the future.
