His name was Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti, but he later changed his name to Gabriel Dante Rossetti to emphasize his relation to an Italian poet. Rossetti went to school for art, and became close friends with two other artists. It is unclear what Rossetti's piers thought of him, but it is safe to assume that he was easy to get along with since he is a founder of the Pre-Raphealite Brotherhood (Everett). There isn't a specific reason why Rossetti became an artist.
