It is a quechua word that means “a cold and remote place difficult to live in”. It is located in Argentina and occupies the northwestern area of Jujuy.  This area borders Chile and Bolivia. The Puna has geological and scenic features that make it one of the last paradises in the world. It is a perfect place for photography enthusiasts, geologists and anyone  who loves extreme landscapes.

There are native mammals such as: llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos. Relatively, a very few birds occupy the area such as: miners and yellow-finches. But the most wonderful are Darwin’s  rheas and the Andean condors. Cattle, herd and donkeys are frequently found in the vast regions of Puna grasslands as alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos are raised to provide wool for textile purposes.

It is very cold in the winter. Moreover some weather seasons in the Puna have never received rain. It is extremely arid with no tall vegetation. In spite of the geographic and climatic conditions of the Puna, a rich variety of flora has envolved there. The use of the term “puneño” dates back to colonial times and there are several theories about its origins.

The classic Argentine “puneño” costume male combines a pair of trousers with a white shirt. The “puneño” wears  a “poncho”, a garment typically made of thick wool, often designed with different colours. Tthas an opening in the centre for the head. As for the famales , it consists of a skirt in different colours.  On her feet, the “puneña” wears “ojotas” (typical flipflops).She always will wears a “manta” (small chall) which made of a sheep, vicuña or alpaca wool. The traditional hairstyle are two braids that fall to both sides of the shoulders.
