Ushers were an ancient race who are now dying out. And Usher himself was the last one alive along with one other relative, his sister Madeline. They had shared the mansion together but life had still felt empty. Madeline has a disease that nobody can figure out or cure living here to an inevitable death. Usher spent his days waiting for something to spark from his sister but he had never got anything. He became more dull and uninterested in life over time, there was no longer any life left in Usher.

For Usher, once Madeline had died, he would have died. Madeline was the only thing that had kept Usher in this world. Usher feared the very house that they lived in as well. And he believed that the house was an influence/reflection of him and his behavior. He was never able to concentrate on anything or calm himself down.

The House of Usher, once a beautiful palace with lush plants surrounding its perimeter, has become a chilling, desolate building over the years. Usher’s song includes the lyrics, “In the greenest of our valleys, By good angels tenanted, Once a fair and steady palace—Radiant palace—And travelers now within that valley, Through the red-litten windows..To a discordant melody; While, like a rapid ghastly river...A hideous throng rush out forever And laugh—but smile no more” (page 328). The lyrics from these two verses further support the idea that the House of Usher, formerly a dazzling palace rich with sunlight, nature, and tranquility, has descended into a “Haunted Palace.” The beginning of Usher’s song refers to what the palace used to be like in his childhood and directly compares the palace to heaven, in which angels reside. As the song progresses, Usher no longer mentions angels in his palace but talks about how travelers regard the palace as horrifying.

After seeing Madeline, Usher’s sister, pass by him in the palace, the protagonist was filled with a sense of discomfort. “I regarded her with an utter astonishment not unmingled with dread—and yet I found it impossible to account for such feelings. A sensation of stupor oppressed me as my eyes followed her retreating steps” (page 326), suggesting that he did not want to be near Madeline for an extended amount of time. Madeline’s presence alone was enough to make the protagonist uncomfortable which creates an eerie, suspenseful atmosphere. This creepy aspect draws the reader in and helps further develop the story, along with the atmosphere.

“A settled apathy, a gradual wasting away of the person, and frequent although transient affections of a partially cataleptical character, were the unusual diagnosis.”(p326)
This quote matches with the theme of bizarre events in the plot because since Madeline was such a hard person to diagnose the doctors had come up with a disease that seemed to not exist. They had said that she was "cataleptical" which means that her body was very rigid and all of her limbs remain in place in whatever position they are placed in. Her physical state later lead Rodrick to believe that his sister had died, when in reality her body was so stiff that she appeared dead.

“In state his glory well befitting, The ruler of the realm was seen. And all with pearl and ruby glowing Was the fair palace door.” (p328)
This quote relates to the theme of finding beauty in exotic locals. Usher talks about how amazing the house looked back when he was young. His house used to have a firm foundation with beautiful detail and architecture. Back when the house was still in good condition the Ushers were happy and still alive. But as Rodrick's family member started dying off he fell into a depression and his home was no longer what it once was. Even though other people might perceive his own as worn down, dark, and scary he still sees it as he remembers it being when his sister was alive.
