It is played with a spherical ball like football between two teams of 15 players each as in rugby union on a rectangular grass field; the aim of the game is to pass the ball through a goal reminiscent of rugby, with two goalposts and a crossbar to separate them, but not at their maximum height: when the ball enters the goalposts and under the crossbar you score a goals and forfeit three points; when the ball passes over the crossbar but only one point is scored between the two posts.

Players can carry the ball with their hands, kick it, pass it with a fist or pass it by themselves dribbling between foot and hand. Roles, modes of points and fouls are mirrored between the various Gaelic sports and the rules are almost entirely the same as those of hurling and camogie. A goalkeeper, who can manage the ball in his hand freely as in football, six defenders, two midfielders and six attackers come onto the pitch.
