Janie thought of Death as a stranger being. She explains him as being invinsible with a certain eerie, quiet personality. Janie asks herself "What need has death for a cover, and what winds can blow against him?" (84). Death is watchful and seems almost eager for the next chance at doing his job. She was worried she may find a trace of him soon because Jody's life is coming to an end.

She personifies Death and speaks of "him" as an observant. He simply picks up people that are dying in our world. In his world though, it is simply "their time". Janie describes Death as "watchful" (84) and "motionless" (84). Jody is dying, and Death is simply the one to pick him up. Janie doesn't blame Death, but resents him slightly. "[Death had] been standing there before there was a where or a when or a then" (84).

From page 84 we know that Janie has a very unique way of looking at death. She personifies death and makes it into a person who lives in a house and waits for his next death. Janie describes him as living in the west in a straight house with no roof. This immovable object she says, waits with a sword ready to hear from a messenger for someones time. She declares that she is aware of this and believes he will visit Jody soon, "She was liable to find a feather from his wings lying in her yard any day now" (84).

Janie describes Death like a person. She describes him as a "strange being with the huge square toes that lived in the west" (84). She also says that "he stands in his high house that overlooks the world...stands watchful and motionless all day" (84). She describes him as lonely and waiting for someone to die so he can do his job. Jody is the one that is dying and Janie doesn't seem like she fears death. She speaks about it normally, like you would speak about a friend.

Janie feels that death is inevitable for all, and that nobody, not even Joe, can avoid it, even though they believe they can overcome it.

This quote is calling death all powerful and I believe that the straight house symbolizes heaven. The person who is dying is Jody. To her death is this mysterious, evil thing that she's about to have to face for the first time.
