Understanding the composition of various assemblies is important to work on Step 8 and Step 9

Normally, one building envelop includes many assemblies, such as roof assembly, exterior wall assembly at the front of the house, exterior wall assembly at the back of the house, the first floor slab assembly, and so on.

And normally, one assembly includes many components. For instance, a roof assembly in an industry warehouse may consist of open web steel joist, steel deck, rigid insulation, roof membrane, ballast and etc.

Your lab instructor will tell you what assembly used in each area, like, what should you use in your roof assembly

The thickness dimension is the dimension that you need to have/know, in order to draw the thickness of the rigid insulation in your ARCH 121 design project

The general rule of thumb: 1" thickness of rigid insulation offer 5 R (5R per inch). You can use it when working on the project/assignment.
But NOTE: the exact R value per inch depends on the manufacture/product (as you learn more about this material, you will understand more)

Generally speaking, to calculate the thickness of the rigid insulation (e.g., R15), apply the rule of thumb (5R/inch), you will get the thickness of R15. Some Math here: 15/5=3", then, based on 25.4mm/", convert 3" to 76.2 MM--this is the thickness that you should have when you draw your design drawing.

Steel Framed, look to the right-hand side, under Nonresidential/Insulation/Min. R-Value

A: some possible causes are as followed: (NOTE: the following explanations are based on the illustration that I show in this Padlet Column-Step 9: Comcheck-2. Your design may be different)

1, have you read everything on my step-by-step Comcheck guide? Did you read all posts in my Padlet that related to Comcheck?

2, did you study, understand, finish Step #8, where you need to calculate the R-value for each assembly? And, do you remember the "envelope" concept: you mailed a letter before? You used an envelope to enclose a letter and seal the envelope, right? In a building, the building envelope includes the roof assembly, exterior wall assembly, and floor slab assembly-these 3 types of assemblies form an "envelope" to "seal" the building (from an energy perspective). Therefore, if one of these assemblies is missing in your Comcheck inputs, the calculation will fail.

3, check the elevation areas where your front of the house (f.o.h.) meets with the back of the house (b.o.h.): in my illustration attached, on East Elevation, the b.o.h. is only the Blue area; while for West Elevation, there is no area for f.o.h. (bcs it meets with the b.o.h.) . Therefore, you should input the areas in Comcheck exactly like that.

4, your design may/should have 2 different types of exterior wall assembly for f.o.h and b.o.h., so, did you check the Comcheck inputs accordingly?

5, check the inputs on walls where you have windows: did you add only the wall area, or did you include the window area as part of the wall area?

6, check the floor slab: did you forget to add the floor slab (I mean your first-floor floor slab, not the floor assembly between the first-floor and the second-floor).

7, check to see if each assembly's R-value meets the SB-10 standard for each corresponding assembly: i.e., when choosing the R-value for insulation in roof assembly (insulation entirely above deck), the R-value itself should be R-35ci., according to page 52, Zone 6, TAble SB 5.5-6-2017. Therefore, your input should be 35.

8, your lab may use other R-values which are different from the SB-10 standard. This will impact (positively or negatively) your calculation of Comcheck results. If this is the case, you can discuss these things in your last Step # 11--where you provide some reflections on how the R-values impact the energy performance of your building design.

I know from past experience that some students may still fail to pass the calculation even though they have tried multiple times. I appreciate your efforts.

The site plan: please use your own site plan from your ARCH121 project. This site plan should show the length and path from the main entrance of your building to the entrance of your building site (distance 1); and please use a "triangle" to indicate where exactly is your building's main entrance. A Legend is needed for various information/linetype/etc.

A transit map: you can start with a screenshot from Google map, which includes the nearest Commuter Rail/Light Rail/Subway (NOTE: highway 7 has a Purple line, a #1 bus line, and a #300 bus line-- Please conduct research and find out what these lines are/mean). Next, find out local bus line(s) that go into Cochrane Dr., and the bus stop(s) that are the nearest/close to your project site. So, you measure the lengths from the nearest bus stop(s) to your building site entrance (distance 2).

Thus, now, you have an idea how long these walking distances are (e.g., distance route A=distance 1 + distance 2). If you have more than one bus stop, of course, you have more than one distance route.

Legend is a must. You can add written descriptions on top of drawings if you think they are best to help you achieve the LEED point.
