I use a silent start to get kids regulated. They have a silent activity choice like (playdough, mindful coloring, DOJO island, fidgets, etc.) to get them calm and regulated for the first five or so minutes.

Emotional scale check ins each morning- check in dependent- red, yellow, green or blue zone (like zones of regulation).

We begin everyday by sharing the answer to a question. Some questions are What is your favorite book? or What is one thing you did last night? We will also play 4 corners with questions. This allows us to build better relatioships by allowing us to get to know each other better and bond over things we have in common.

From day one of a school year, we have the same routines that we use so that students know what to expect each day in my class whether there is a sub or not.

Each class period follows the same basic structure for the beginning, middle, and end and we use consistent structures for grouping and partner work to create a sense of predictability for students.

I have a TO DO list of 1,2,3 and every day the students are told to follow 1,2,3 and if they are ready to go when class begins they get a Brave Ticket.

We have a student who has experienced complex, ongoing trauma/grief and is responding accordingly. His teachers truly use all of the 6 R's but especially show mastery in Repetitive responses, Relational (they have beautiful relationships with him), rewarding appropriately, etc. I'm so grateful for these master teachers and support staff who love him so much. He is in the safest place he can be. We can't change his situation, but we can continue to make his school a safe place for him.

We start our day with a 2-5 minute mindfulness activity. Some days we do some chair yoga.

I use talking points to communicate with my families on a weekly basis. I like to make families aware about things like homework, special dress-up days, field trips, and behavior issues. I find open communication is very helpful throughout the school year.

Get to know what is rewarding and motivating for your students. Students who lack motivation aren't going to work any harder if they don't care for the proposed reward. Getting to know what they like - both intrinsic and extrinsic.
