At the begging of this lesson I would ask the students how many of them have solar panels. Being that we live in Arizona it will probably be a very popular thing that the students have in common with their homes. After this I will lead it into a discussion on if the students know why their houses have solar panels on them. Most first graders, being so young, will not know what the solar panels are for. This is where I will lead into our lesson of how the sun creates energy. 
One way for the students to learn how the sun creates energy is by planting something. Plants need the energy from the sun to grow so this would be a good way for the see how the energy from the sun really works. After the students see how the sun creates energy in plants then we can discuss how the energy from the sun creates energy in our homes.
