Nelson Mandela. The first black president of South Africa. More importantly, he was the leader of the movement to end apartheid in South Africa. Mandela was arrested twice. Once for treason and once for illegally attempting to leave the country. He was sent to the Robben Island prison where he spent 18 of the 27 years that he was in prison. But why did Mandela get put in prison for treason in the first place?

Mandela being the first black president of South Africa wanted to change the view that white people had about them being a lower class, when in fact they were all humans. Before Mandela was president, South Africa was racially divided, “he led both of the peaceful protests and armed resistance protests against the white minority oppressive regime.” (HISTORY, 2009) He didn’t care if he went to Jail for it because he knew that it was his dream and he had to make sacrifices for it. To this day, South Africa is still very racially divided, and it seems like everyone has forgotten what Mandela did for them, but why?

Mandela’s protest against the white minority sent a ripple of people fighting against the same thing around the world. Everyone knew what he did, and he is very respected as a person. After his time as president of South Africa, he became a global advocate for human rights and continued his work until he died in late 2013. His work changed everyone’s views on how they see humans, coloured or not, he put a spin on human rights and played a major role in proving to everyone that we are all equal. The white minority had everyone thinking that black people were of less power and should be doing all of the cleaning and work. Black people usually grew up in quite poor places and were “Often invading homes for jewellery, clothes and simple things that would make them feel rich.” (Sarah Silver [Boyfriends mum] 2019)

Mandela always did everything in his power to help and create equality within South Africa even if it would throw him in prison for 27 years, he was trying to search for peace. Mandela’s way of trying to get people to work with him was not by controlling them or bossing them around, he simply explained what he wanted to achieve and if people had the same mindset, they would join. “And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.” (Nelson Mandela, N.A.)He didn’t force anyone to join or go along with it, it was all in the people’s choice. Mandela and his peace and equality group would have offended many of the white minority along the way as they were always looking down on coloured people as “peasants” which would have caused them to be very alarmed or struck by their behaviour looking for equality.

His world view vs theirs...3

The worldview that Nelson Mandela was taught as a child was the simple African Thembu people tribe, they had all of their rituals and gatherings that they would go by but then they loved a very normal life. The only problem was, they were being discriminated by the white people and being enslaved, which was made very clear to him when he was going through a transition into manhood ceremony. During most of his school he was quite a political young man being elected as a student representative council in his second school. Knowing that he did not seem to be a fan of the white people controlling the land and all of the coloured people, “he went to the University of Witwatersrand to study law.” (Biography.com, 2019). Mandela joined the anti-apartheid movement in 1942 with a bunch of other South African people that he knew, they all fought against the white minority for many years with Nelson fighting up until he died in 2013.

Both of the worldviews were quote similar being that they both understood that they were all under control by the white minority, but in Mandela’s view he wanted to chase his dream of finding equality whereas in the tribe they just sat back and let it happen.

“A winner is a dreamer who never gives up.” (Nelson Mandela, N.A.) As I was doing my research on Nelson Mandela I came across this quote that he had once said during his life. Nelson Mandela was a dreamer that dreamt about equality and the world being one peaceful place where all races respected and loved one another for who they are and not what they are. Nelson never gave up on his dream and kept fighting for it with everything that he had. It inspired me to always fight for what I dream of and always try to reach my goals even if I have to make certain sacrifices to achieve them. It changes my world view by adding that in everything that I do I should be putting in my best effort and doing everything in my power to receive deservingly the result that I dream about.

He led protests and fought against what was considered the right at the time of the event, but no matter what happened, prison or being told he couldn’t do it, he still did it and he still fought with everything that he had to make the world and his country a better and more peaceful place.
