Parker Kelbrook is a natural prankster. He is smooth-talking, funny, and likeable, but he tends to go too far. On his first day working at the community pool, he decides to fill it with fifty-seven gallons of purple fruit punch powder. Needless to say, he is fired instantly. When Mr. Kelbrook finds out about the joke, he is not happy with his son.

Before Parker knows it, he is toiling away on a hot farm with five other kids who do not like him. By the time he starts learning the value of hard work, odd things begin to happen. One morning, everyone awakes to find a seventeen-hundred-pound cow on top of the barn! Parker's curiosity and impulse regains control of him once more, leading to much more trouble than anticipated.

The radishes the boys pick symbolize their hard work and motivation to finish their summer labor. All of the radishes they grew are different and alike at the same time. When the boys break the rule "Don't eat the crops" by taking a bite out of the radishes, they are suddenly lifted off the ground! Their succumbing to the temptation to eat the vegetable is inevitable and sneaky, but it proves the crops are magical.

"The sun continued to rise. The day warmed. Parker's body found new ways to ache. And he did his best to think about anything other than the pain. Sadly, that was easier said than done" (Borba 66). This quote is important because it shows that at the beginning of the story, Parker is not cut out for farm work. He needs to toughen up if he wants to fit in at the farm.

"So that night Parker, Molly, and the boys carried cots to the field and arranged them a safe distance from the sprouts. Under the stars they talked, and laughed, and for the first time felt truly together" (Borba 228). This quote is important because it shows that the boys, and Molly, have accepted each other and formed a valuable friendship during the long summer days in the fields.

Parker's seersucker suit is not a particularly important part of the story, but it is an image from the first part of the book. Parker decides to wear a seersucker suit onto the train that will bring him to the farm. When the train stops, Parker is quickly escorted off the train. Once he is on the ground, he assumes a porter will bring his suitcase down from the luggage cart for him. This never happens. Instead, the train whistles and chugga-chugga-chugga, it's gone. In ten seconds, Parker is left with his suit as his only clothing for the rest of the summer.

I made a text-to-self connection with Parker, the main character in my story. I realized that I can be like Parker in the sense that I need to work harder to get things done quicker. I know I need to remember the Bible verse that fits almost perfectly with my connection, "All hard work brings profit, but mere talk only leads to poverty" (Proverbs 14:23).

Parker learns that working hard and owning up to his choices often benefit you in the long run. His change in work ethic motivation is visible by the end of the story, and he actually likes the farm when the summer is over. Parker learned that if you work hard good things will happen, as shown in the quote above.

The morning the boys wake up to find Martha the dairy cow standing on top of the barn is when Parker begins to wonder what the farm is hiding. At first, he is in disbelief, and so are the others. Chet, one of the boys Parker is working with, asks if Martha jumped up onto the roof. Of course, she didn't. Martha ate one of the magical radishes, and the boys must face the facts. The vegetables of their labor possess the power to make anything that consumes them levitate.

The floating goat Parker spots outside his window one night is important to the story because it is the first piece of evidence that the crops possess some kind of power. It is common knowledge that goats will eat almost anything, so the goat ate one of the magic radishes, causing it to levitate.
