         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp; &nbsp;</div><div>Posted by Richard Proudfoot<br><br></div><div>The research paper selected for this week is titled: “Fructose: Metabolic, Hedonic, and Societal Parallels with Ethanol”<br><br></div><div>This research paper is a review study from the Department of Pediatrics and Institute for Health Policy Studies, University of California, San Francisco, CA 94143, This single authored thorough review article is by Robert H. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L., Professor emeritus of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The article is published in the September 2010 <em>Journal of the AMERICAN DIETETIC ASSOCIATION</em>. The author reviews the biochemical, addictive, and cultural similarities of ethanol and fructose in comparison to glucose.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>This study is important because while general knowledge and cultural norms acknowledge the ill effects of over consumption of ethanol, the over consumption of fructose (sugar) ill effects are not recognized by the public or the scientific community.<br><br></div><div>The key findings from this study are that ethanol and fructose both have parallels in the liver as substrates for de novo lipogenesis, hepatic insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hepatic steatosis. The fructosylation of proteins with resultant superoxide formation can result in hepatic inflammation like acetaldehyde, an intermediary metabolite of ethanol.&nbsp; Lastly by stimulating the “hedonic pathway” of the brain both directly and indirectly, fructose creates habituation, and possibly dependence; also paralleling ethanol.<br><br></div><div>Clinical implication from of this study is a reminder that the over consumption of fructose (sugar) and /or ethanol can lead to alcoholic steatohepatitis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and cirrhosis; cardiomyopathy or myocardial infarction; hypertension; dyslipidemia; pancreatitis, malnutrition; obesity and addiction or habituation. That both ethanol and fructose are liver toxins that should be avoided, particularly with any hint of liver disease. That sugar is a gateway drug to all addictions.1 &nbsp;<br><br></div><div>1. PLoS ONE 12<br>(10): e0186708. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.<br>pone.0186708<br>I though this study was interesting since we recently talked about metabolic syndrome and the importance of Vitamin D. This study looked at a lot of variables, although done in a small sample size, in an effort to investigate the link between MetS and COPD. What they found was a link between cigarette smoking, insulin resistance, vitamin D and COPD.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>A&nbsp;key finding of this study was that vitamin D deficiency increased as the amount of packs smoked per year increased and that Vitamin D deficiency seemed to amplify the negative effects that smoking has on pulmonary function. This relates to nutritional science because Vitamin D deficiency is also related to type 2 diabetes and the onset of metabolic syndrome so when you have a patient or client that is a smoker, recommending foods that are high in vitamin D, and/or vitamin D supplementation, could potentially make a difference with respect to both insulin sensitivity and lung function.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Clinically, this study highlights potential of Vitamin D supplementation and that it could be used as part of a therapy for people with COPD that have a more severe deficiency and could potentially have beneficial and protective effects for smokers before they develop COPD with simultaneous synergistic effects at modulating MetS. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Probiotics-Based Treatment as an Integral Approach for Alcohol Use Disorder in Alcoholic Liver Disease. -Ashley Wahlman</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The study I choose looks at the benefits of probiotics and helping to mitigate alcohol liver disease (ALD). I thought this was interesting because I know probiotics helps with people who have IBD but I hadn't thought about its beneficials properties in people who may suffer with ALD.&nbsp; A key finding in this study is that using a probiotic such as<em> lactobacillus Reuteri </em>can produce antimicrobial peptides that can prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Also <em>lactobacillus rhamnosus</em> another probiotic has shown to reduce alcohol induced translocation, oxidative stress, and inflammation in the liver. This relates to nutritional science because you can buy probiotics in the grocery store or order specific supplements that can not only help with gut microbiota but also help people with ALD.&nbsp; In addition, the clinical application is that this is a potential treatment for ALD that would not be as expensive in comparison to other treatments.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Ellen Reusch<br><br>For this week's wall posting, I came across this article documenting a study performed in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2010. The study looked into the nutritional status of elderly patients that were smokers versus in those that were not smokers. We learned through this week's readings that tobacco use poses significant effects on a patient's nutritional status. In this study, 1,345 individuals over the age of 60 were evaluated for sociodemographic, health, and nutritional aspects of their lives. Overall, the study contained more former smokers than smokers. Observations included that female smokers tended to exhibit less fruit intake, and smokers overall tended to have fewer meals per day and a greater frequency of being underweight when compared with the non-moking group. This study demonstrates how influential tobacco use can be on a patient's overall and lasting health as the aging process occurs. It is important for clinicians to understand the impacts tobacco use can pose to a patient's overall longevity, as clinicians often play a crucial role in encouraging patients to stop using tobacco.<br><br>Bonfitto Goncalves, et. al.          <title>Nutrition in alcohol-related liver disease: Physiopathology and management - Cole Zetter</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In this weeks weekly wall I read an article related to my post in this week's discussion board. This article is related to nutrition in alcohol-related liver disease. I thought this study was important because it highlighted the fact that malnutrition from alcohol consumption was encompassing both macro- and micro-nutrient deficiency, remained one of the most frequent complications of alcohol related liver disease. This is a serious deal because when individuals suffer from alcohol related liver disease, malnutrition can reduce their survival expectancy and also their quality of life. One key finding of this study that I read was the fact that excess alcohol consumption over a prolonged period of time lead to impaired insulin resistance and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This is due to the fact that because in chronic alcohol consumption, glycogen stores of the liver are depleted. When someone with chronic liver disease is binge drinking, gluconeogenesis is inhibited. This means that when a healthy individual consumes a small amount of alcohol their blood sugar levels do not change much, however when a person who abuses and has chronic liver disease drinks a small amount of alcohol, they may enter a hypoglycemic state. This shows how much the consumption of alcohol can change the metabolism of carbohydrates. This article later went on to show the effects of proteins and muscle, lipids, B-vitamin and folate, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Magnesium with alcohol and chronic liver disease.          <description><![CDATA[<div>My selected article for this week is the effect of ethanol on lipid metabolism. As we learned in this lecture, alcohol can induce fatty liver disease. But the fatty liver can be induced by lipid accumulation that we learned from metabolic syndrome lecture. Therefore, I think this study is important that describe how the hepatic lipid metabolism is controlled with the presence of alcohol. The key finding of this study is that ethanol perturbs almost all aspects of hepatic lipid metabolism. They investigated the effects of ethanol on fatty acids and triglyceride synthesis. The initial hepatic changes caused by excessive alcohol consumption is steatosis, which occurs in almost all patients who consume harmful levels of alcohol. Also, ethanol activated de novo lipogenesis via a number of processes, leading to lipid accumulation in the liver. As nutritional science approaches, this study is not directly food related. But as we learned in the lecture, consumption alcohols cause nutritional deficiencies.          <title>Sidney Harm: Effect of Varenicline Combined With Medical Management on Alcohol Use Disorder With Comorbid Cigarette Smoking: A Randomized Clinical Trial</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;</div><div>This study looks further into a common treatment for smoking cessation, Varenicline. This study’s purpose is to determine if this treatment can have an impact for individuals who are dealing with heavy drinking and smoking. They defined heavy drinking as four or more drinks for women and five or more drinks for men at least twice a week, they defined smoking for their inclusion criteria for an individual who smokes two or more times a week. Included were 131 participants split into two groups; a placebo group and treatment group who received 1 mg of varenicline twice a day for 16 weeks. The results showed that there was a decrease in heavy drinking within the men in the treatment group compared to the placebo group. Overall, the varenincline decreased smoking within the entire treatment group, which is expected since it is a known treatment for smoking cessation.          <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;The aim of the study I chose for this week's weekly wall is to investigate the acute effects of smoking abstinence on energy intake. They also examined many appetite-related hormones like ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide-1, obestatin, cholecystokinin, and insulin levels in the blood to know if they are stimulated by acute smoking or smoking abstinence and if they are the underlining cause of increasing energy intake. The researchers found that participants who stopped smoking increased their energy intake compared to smokers. However, none of the appetite-related hormones differed from the smokers' group. The importance of this study and its relation to nutrition is that people may begin or continue smoking using the excuse that it helps them control weight, and stopping would make them gain weight.          <title>Behavioral interventions for smoking cessation: an overview and network meta‐analysis</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The leading cause of disease and death worldwide is smoking. Quitting smoking early is critical in preventing negative health outcomes. Many people use behavioral interventions to help them quit smoking; these vary widely and have different focuses. This study conducted a network meta-analysis to determine how modes of delivery, person delivering the intervention, and behavioral interventions for smoking cessation influence the likelihood of smoking cessation after 6 months of quitting. Representing 250,563 participants and 845 distinct study arms, data shows that behavior counseling, paired with financial incentives, dramatically increase the quit rate of smoking 6 months post-commitment in study participants. Financial incentives from the government to get people to quit smoking could help alleviate indirect healthcare costs associated with smokers. Behavioral intervention is necessary in these treatments because of the mental strength it takes to quit smoking and how the nicotinic pathways in the brain affect physiology.          <title>Interactions of Alcohol, Smoking, Nutrition, and Exercise to Metabolic Syndrome- Lydia Duncan</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>For this week’s topic, I chose an article that encompasses alcohol and smoking, in relation to the Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). The two main goals of this study were to view the relation of smoking and alcohol to MetS (w/nutrition &amp; exercise controlled), and to identify the interactions of smoking &amp; alcohol and exercise &amp; nutrition on MetS. As we have discussed previously, MetS is a group of several risks factors that result in an amplified risk of cardiac events, and in order for diagnosis, the individual must (consistently) have three or more of these risk factors. The determining criteria for this disease are a higher waist circumference, high triglyceride counts, low HDL Cholesterol, high blood pressure, and a high fasting glucose. This cross-sectional study analyzed 4025 workers in Taiwan, in 2012. A large majority of the data was collected using self-reported questionnaires and medical lab tests.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>One key finding of this study was that, in males, smoking showed a higher risk in most/all of the metabolic criteria. They especially reached significantly low levels of HDL’s, high triglyceride counts, and an increased waist circumference. They also found, in regard to males, that healthy nutrition behavior reduced the risk of an increase in blood pressure. Looking into the male workers and alcohol use, alcohol use heavily increased weight circumference, but decreased the risk of low HDL levels. From this data, it was found that exercising helped decrease the risk of an increased waist circumference. For women, alcohol did not show any significant interactions between nutrition, exercise, and MetS (possibly due to the small sample size of females in this cohort).&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>This study is important to nutritional sciences because it helps us understand the link between different lifestyle factors (nutrition, exercise, smoking, and drinking) and the development or side effects of MetS. Lifestyle factors can greatly contribute (although are not the only contributor) to the development of different chronic diseases, such as MetS. One downfall of this study is that it focused more on males than females, due to a higher number of significant interactions within the males. Their sample size also had a relatively small number of female smokers, so they were unable to use that for data purposes.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>The clinical implications of this study are that, as we’ve learned throughout this week, excessive use of alcohol and smoking are lifestyle factors that can be detrimental to an individual’s health when there is no intervention. Focusing on the cessation of smoking and drinking for a patient could greatly improve their health and life outcomes.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This study is important because it highlights both how alcohol affects an individual’s nutrition, as well as, how nutrition can be utilized to treat those with alcoholic liver disease (ALD). This study aimed to try and standardize the verbiage of malnutrition to better compare studies that focused on similar topics. A key finding of this study was the importance of assessing for sarcopenia in studies focusing on malnutrition, specifically as a result of alcoholism. Sarcopenia is a disorder resulting in loss of the skeletal muscle mass. This study found that sarcopenia is a main indicator of malnutrition, which related this study to nutritional sciences. Clinically, this study helps to show what doctors should be looking for in patients who struggle with alcoholism. It also emphasizes the importance of improving muscle mass in patients who show sarcopenia. This study examined the sleep quality of cigarette smokers and some health effects that result. The result of this study found that cigarette smokers reported a poor quality of sleep. Additionally, they were then found to have increased cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and overall urge to smoke more frequently. In conjunction with the sleep monitoring, the study looked at whether increased amounts of physical activity would improve sleep quality, which it did. This study is important because it provides further evidence towards negative health problems that can be associated with tobacco use. This relates to nutritional sciences because sleep quality can affect diet and exercise choices. Additionally, this can have many clinical implications regarding motivations to quit or something to observe in patients who smoke. If you did have a patient who smokes, you could recommend increasing amounts of exercise to help with any sleep problems if smoking cessation is not what the patients wants.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I chose this study due to how informational it was. It provided information on what a smoker lacks in their diet, what is most prominent in their diet, and why they are more susceptible to chronic disease. The study focuses on individuals in Portugal using a multi-stage random probability design. Interviewers obtained information about social characteristics, eating habits, smoking, and alcohol habits. Results from the study showed that individuals who smoke consume exceptionally more alcohol and lower foods with the proper nutritional needs. This article is important because it aids physicians and patients to know why someone who has a smoking habit has a history of health problems. They can start with one's nutritional needs and how that is harming or helping. The key finding is that when they discovered that smokers have low fiber, antioxidant, or phytochemical intake they realized that's why chronic diseases are so prominent in that population. There is evidence to support this too because as we know smokers suffer from lung cancer, low circulation of provitamins, bladder cancer, and other disorders. What was not in the survey is that while smokers lack those things they will eat other food groups such as poultry, red meats, and more saturated foods. It all depends on the environment a person is in as well so certain factors may play more of a role in other places; for example, access to food and/or proper consumption of food. Particularly in Portugal smokers have the least healthy diet and consume more alcohol than food. The study implies that there should be a program aimed toward educating individuals globally on lifestyle factors and how they can be helpful or detrimental.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The purpose of this article was to discuss the effects of weight gain after smokers quit smoking. This article reviews the behavioral and pharmacological approaches to lessen weight gain in smokers that are quitting. Cigarette smoking has been advertised to control body weight. In fact, adolescent girls reported that they started smoking to control weight gain. Nicotine in cigarettes reduces body weight by increasing the resting metabolic rate. Nicotine is known as a sympathomimetic drug, which means there is an increase energy expenditure by an action on peripheral tissue and through the regulation of metabolism in the brain. The consumption of nicotine initiates the release of norepinephrine and of epinephrine, this then increases thermogenesis in adipose tissue. The release of these neurotransmitters also suppress hunger. It is found that when a smoker decides to quit, there typically is weight gain. This is due to a decrease in metabolic rate and increase in caloric intake, due to hunger not being as suppressed. Physicians have said that the benefits of quitting smoking far out weight the risk of post-quitting weight gain. The toxicity of cigarettes are far more dangerous than the weight gain. It was found that women who quit smoking, if they joined a weight-concerns group there was evident less weight-gain and less women who went back to the habit of smoking, compared to counseling on weight control and smoking cessation groups. There are also pharmaceuticals that aid in controlling weight gain after quitting smoking like bupropion, nicotine-replacement medications, fluoxetine, and varenicline. The clinical implications of this article are physicians with patients who are quitting smoking need to let the patients know about potential weight gain and the behavioral and pharmacological approaches they can implement to reduce weight gain after quitting smoking.<br><br>Audrain-McGovern, J., &amp; Benowitz, N.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Given the rapidly growing burden of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, including more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer's and a projected rise to 13 million by 2050(Alz.org), the identification of factors that prevent or delay the onset of dementia remains of paramount concern. Long-term alcohol consumption could lead to Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or lower cognitive function. “According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adults aged 65 years and older who are healthy should not have more than 3 drinks on a given day or 7 drinks in a week.”(Koch et al.). Drinking less than one drink per week was associated with lower dementia risk than infrequent higher-quantity drinking(Koch et al.). Consumers of more than fourteen drinks per week had the most severe cognitive decline and the highest risk for Alzheimer's dementia later in life(Koch et al.). For this post I am focusing on alcohol use disorder (AUD). Supporting the nutritional status of individuals with AUD is often a small part of the recovery process, despite evidence that recovery outcomes can be improved with nutrition therapy.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Chronic alcohol consumption has been linked with mucosal damage in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach; delayed gastric emptying, increased intestinal permeability and membrane damage, bacterial overgrowth and cancer. Individuals with AUD are often deficient in or have inadequate intake of most</div><div>nutrients, including vitamins A, B vitamins, C, D, E, K, magnesium, selenium, and zinc.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>One key finding that I found interesting is that up to an unknown level of alcohol consumption, energy from alcohol increases BMI and fat mass; however, higher alcohol consumption (more than 12.5 kcal/kg/day, which would be about 50% of caloric needs for most people) is inversely related to BMI and fat mass. Therefore, it would be important to know the severity of AUD to individualize nutritional interventions.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Clinical implications from this review point to the need for better nutrition screening and prioritization of nutrition therapy for patients with AUD, especially for those with malnutrition. The most important changes would be elimination of alcohol and the consumption of a well-balanced diet containing sufficient amounts of macro and micronutrients. For malnourished patients, this would be 30-40 kcal/ kg body weight and 1-2 g protein/kg.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This study looks at the consequential effects of alcohol induced cardiomyopathy. The study states that this type of alcohol induced cardiac event is independent of micronutrient or electrolyte deficiencies. It acts by reducing myocardial contractility; and increasing heart chamber dilation which leads to arrhythmias and episodic heart failure.</div><div>These effects of alcohol are present due to alcohols ability to introduce apoptosis among cardiac myocytes leading to fibrosis. These structural changes along with alcohol induces intracellular membrane and receptor changes cause everlasting damage to the hearts ability to maintain function. Current treatments call for the regeneration of myocytes as well as changes to accumulation of fibrous tissue, but cessation of alcoohol is recommended. A left ventricular assist device is also adeqaute treatment as it helps the heart pump more effectively under duress, however, end stage alcohol induced cardiomyopathy requires a heart transplant for reversal but is only offered to the individuals that can refrain from any alcohol use. <br><br>Fernández-Solà J.          <description><![CDATA[<div>There is an increased rate of alcohol consumption globally and this is thereby increasing the rate at which people have alcohol liver disease. The purpose of this article was to look at how nutritional management in patients with alcohol liver disease (ALD) can better the health of the patient. This is because malnutrition is one of the major issue people with alcohol liver disease face. People with ALD face malnutrition because they take in calories at a reduced rate. Most of their calories are consumed in the form of alcohol and they have limited space to consume proteins, fats and micronutrients.<br>&nbsp;A key finding of the study is that increased uptake of nutrients by ALD patients showed increased mortality rate, reduced rate of hepatitis, also better quality of life and better post-transplant outcomes.<br>This relates to nutritional sciences as ALD patients tend to be lacking some<br>micronutrients and providing nutritional supplementation for nutrients like<br>B12, thiamine, vitamin A and vitamin D will provide them with better quality of<br>life.          <description><![CDATA[<div><em>Tamunoerenomie Inimgba-Olunwa</em><br><strong><em>A review of vitamin supplementation and treatment.</em></strong><br>The purpose of the article was to research on how effective vitamin supplementation would be for patients with alcoholism and alcohol-related illnesses. The article is important because alcoholism and alcoholic liver disease is usually associated with clinical and experimental evidence of vitamin, mineral, and protein deficiencies which is usually as a result of a reduced intake, malabsorption and increased loss of these essential nutrients. The article reviews research on vitamin supplementation and a key finding was a lot of alcoholism treatment programs include a variety of nutritional supplementation to their therapy without an abundance of research on the validity of these treatments. However, looking at the nutritional deficits present in alcoholic populations, enhanced vitamin levels seems like the right logical step. However, the overall health of these patients is very delicate and calls for caution when suggesting these supplements in terms of dosage and what vitamins should be combines. This provides a room for more research for nutritional scientists. The clinical implications of the study is that patients suffering with alcoholism, and thereby alcohol-related diseases will keep having progressive and frequent changes in their nutrition status as the disease worsens, and usually only cessation of alcohol intake to an extent will allow complete restoration of normal nutritional status, however patients find it hard to adhere to an alcohol-free dietary intake, so safe ways to supplement for the loss of these essential nutrients may be beneficial to their general health status.<br><br></div><div>Lewis.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This study addresses electric cigarettes as a way to quit smoking. The study does a great job of assessing whether this method works. However, the study does not address whether people who decide to use electric cigarettes eventually continue the use to even greater than they did when smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes. Electric cigarettes are more convenient, and they can be used virtually anywhere discretely. The study compares nicotine patches to electric cigarettes, and they found the patches to be more beneficial. I think people who are used to the general sensation of smoking, the inhale and exhale, are more likely to abuse electric cigarettes rather that use them as a way to quit the habit. The trial was used to help better comprehend the use of electric cigarettes as a way to stop the use of traditional cigarettes, but after reading this study, I think further studies are warranted.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The article I chose for this discussion post was about how tobacco and alcohol modifies the protective effects of diet on oral carcinogens. The article is important because the link between diet and oral cancer is essential to discuss. The article included a case study with 296 subjects. The subjects included smokers, nonsmokers, drinks, and nondrinkers. The purpose of the study was to see how the consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with the risk of oral cancer. The results of the study shows that there is an inverse association between oral and oropharyngeal cancer and the frequent intake of fruits and salads. For light and heavy smokers, the intake of fruit and vegetables was associated with the prevention of disease. For nonsmokers, no fruit or vegetable was associated with a reduced risk of oral and oropharyngeal cancer. For light and heavy drinkers, the intake of fruit and vegetables was associated with the prevention of disease.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This study recruited patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and COPD and evaluated if there were any relationships between smoking, insulin resistance, and vitamin D levels.&nbsp; The first interesting finding was that 62% of the COPD patients also had metabolic syndrome with most of them not knowing they had additional issues.&nbsp; Of the metabolic syndrome patients, 22% had COPD which was 2-3 times the national average for the population.&nbsp; Clinically, this suggests that COPD patients should be evaluated comorbidities associated with metabolic syndrome.&nbsp; C-reactive protein was used as a measure for insulin production and insulin resistance.&nbsp; Although there was no difference between the metabolic syndrome and the COPD patients, those diagnosed with both conditions had significantly higher c-reactive protein levels.&nbsp; This increase was seen in both current and former smokers with higher levels being associated with greater time and amount smoked.&nbsp; This suggests a an association between cigarette smoking and insulin resistance.&nbsp; Lastly, there was a negative association between c-peptide production and vitamin D levels.&nbsp; Since vitamin D is known to have protective qualities in regard to lung function, patients’ vitamin D levels should be monitored. &nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

The Covid-19 Pandemic is relevant in today’s society as this event has yet to conclude. The world is currently entering the third summer with the virus being present. There have been consequences on the mental health of individuals since the start of the pandemic. The pandemic led to social isolation and continued stress which research has established a relationship of psychological distress and alcohol consumption. The authors found that several studies identified an increase in the proportion of people consuming alcohol during the pandemic. A few studies linked psychological factors such as anxiety, hopelessness, and social isolation with the increase use of alcohol. These findings relate to nutritional sciences because often times nutrition consultations come from referrals by primary care providers or those who work in psychology.          <title>Malnutrition and Alcoholic Liver Disease</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The article I chose for this week shows the negative impact of alcoholic liver disease. One of the consequences in malnutrition. The article notes that protein calorie malnutrition is commonly seen in alcoholics with and without ALD. Malnutrition may be a result of early satiety and increased caloric substitution with alcohol. Other nutritional deficiencies highlighted in the article include Vitamin B deficiency, Folate deficiency, and Zinc deficiency. To combat the malnutrition brought on by alcoholic liver disease, it is recommended to keep fasting periods as short as possible. Instead, it is recommended that small frequent meals be utilized. Another complication that the article includes is increased risk of infections. This is a result of increased hepatocyte susceptibility to alcohol toxicity. This is important nutritionally because alcoholic liver disease not only impacts the nutrients absorbed, but it also hinders ones immune system.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This study projected the life expectancy of 18 European countries by considering the impact of smoking, obesity, and alcohol on mortality.&nbsp;<br><br>I thought this study was important because alcohol and tobacco use is widespread in developed nations. So, seeing its potential effect on the life expectancy ( using Europe as a case study) is something that could help in improving public health policies and awareness regarding the use of these substances.&nbsp;<br><br>Interestingly, the study projected an increase in the life expectancies of men (from 78.3 years to 90.5 years) and women from 83.4 years to 92.8 years.
