When the Party's Over is a song sang by Billie Eilish. Within the song, it seems that Billie is the speaker expressing her feelings after losing a lover. The audience of this song is Billie's fictional lover. The reason why it is a fictional lover is because in an interview with Vanity Fair, Billie stated that she doesn't have a boyfriend and couldn't have one as that would be being mean to him. When she says being mean shes inferring to hurting him, which is something that she doesn't want to do. She then goes on and shares that at one point she had almost got into a relationship but instead it was really exclusive (5:56-6:08). The overall purpose of this song is Billie expressing her feelings after a break-up and feeling alone. There seems to be no occasion as Billie stated that she has never been in an actual relationship. Within both the lyrics and video the obvious tone seems to be sad as Bille uses lyrics that are sad and colors in the music video such as black and white that can be emotionally appealing. It can then be concluded that the subject of this song is how a break-up can cause you to feel lonely.

After going through a break-up, Billie tries to convince her audience which is her lover that she's lonely even though she may lie about it. She uses ethos, pathos, and logos in both the lyrics and video to get her message across. As Billie Eilish uses these appeals throughout both lyrics and video the song is not effective because Bille herself has not experienced a real break up.

ETHOS:
Within the lyrics, Billie uses a numerous amount of ethos to convince the audience that she has been through a break-up and knows the damage that both she and her fictional lover have caused each other. She starts the song off by saying "Don't you know I'm no good for you." Within the first line, Billie uses ethos to explain to her lover that she is not good for him. This goes back to the interview with Vanity Fair when she stated that she couldn't have a boyfriend as that would be hurting him (Vanity Fair). Assuming that's what she meant in the first line, this could be her trying to explain to her lover that she's not good for this relationship. Following the first line, Billie proceeds the song by saying "I've learned to lose you, can't afford to/ Tore my shirt to stop you bleedin/But nothin' ever stops you leavin' ." By saying this, she's trying to convince her lover that she has prepared herself to lose him even though she doesn't want to. She even tears her shirt to stop him from bleeding which could be that although she tried to stop him from leaving and gave her all, he still left (Billie Eilish...JustRandomThings). In the chorus, she also uses some ethos saying "Quiet when I'm coming home and I'm on my own." In this line of the chorus, Billie could be talking about feeling lonely when she's in the house by herself. The second line then continues when she says "I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that/ I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that." As she talks about feeling lonely, in this line she uses ethos to convince her fictional lover that she likes being alone when in reality she knows she doesn't. Within her lyrics, she uses ethos a lot as she convinces the audience by showing her character which can conclude that she is damaged after this break-up.

Pathos and Logos

As much as Billie uses ethos within her lyrics, she also uses pathos to convince the audience by appealing to their emotions. In the second verse, she uses pathos by saying, "Call me friend, but keep me closer/(Call me back)." This lyric refers to the phrase keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. This shows pathos as she may be trying to make her lover feel guilty by using this phrase. Although he calls her a friend he keeps on hurting her which makes their relationship toxic. ( Billie Eilish...Genius). In her lyrics, Billie uses logos to state a fact by telling us that shes over her lover. In the third line of the second verse, she says "And I'll call you when the party's over." This can conclude that she's trying to dismiss him by saying that she'll call him later, when in reality she may not want to speak to him as she may still be hurt about the break-up. In her final appeal of using pathos, she uses it in the bridge of her song saying "But nothing is better sometimes/Once we've both said our goodbyes/Let's just let it go/Let me let you go." Here she tries to appeal to the audiences by implying that even after they have broken-up it was hard for her to move on as it may not have been for her lover. She also has a harder time letting him go, as for him it may have not been difficult.

When looking at her hair color, accessories that she is wearing, and certain actions she does, it can convince the audience of her character in different ways.

Within the lyrics, Billie uses appeals in order to capture her audiences attention to explain that she is lonely after a break-up, even though she may claim she's not. As she uses more ethos in her lyrics to convince the audience of her character, she does the opposite within her music video. In her music video, she uses more pathos to try to convince the audience by appealing to their emotions. It also seems that she is going through a dark time in her life as that represents with the all-white clothing, black drink, and black tears which is something different from the lyrics. Although Billie uses ethos, pathos, and logos within both her lyrics and music video, the song overall is not effective. It is not effective because Billie hasn't had a boyfriend before.
