Setting the stage: By 1914 Europe was divided into two camps the triple entente which included great Britain, France, and Russia and the triple alliance which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy now they are locked in one of the most violent war in history.

the great war begins: When Austria declared war Russia mobilized its troops along the Austrian border and when they thought that Germany might joined them they mobilized their troops on their border which Germany thought might be declaration of war which led them to declare war on Russia.

Nations take Sides:During mid-August in 1914 the battle lines were drawn asnd the war was about to get underway Germany and Austria- Hungary were considered the central powers with the ottoman empire and Bulgaria joining later to attempt to gain lost land the other side was the allies with France great britian and Russia with japan joining weeks later and Italy even later. Italy then joined the central powers when accusing their former partners for unjustly causing the war. In the late summer millions of soldiers marched toward war happy thinking it will be quick but many people realized what will happen such as sir Edward grey

The Conflict Grinds Along: Germany after facing a war on both sides of them they developed a strategy called the Schlieffen Plan, named after its creator General Alfred Graf von Schlieffen this basically meant attacking france in the west and then attacking Russia in the east speed was curricial to the plan On September 5, however, the Allies regrouped and attacked the Germans northeast of Paris, in the valley of the Marne River after a fast victory on France was thought to come up but failed.

War in the trenches: in in early 1915 soldiers dug long trenches parallel to each other this type of warfare is trench warfare many lives were lost during this a soldier wrote they slept in the mud, ate mud, washed in mud and dreamed mud there were rats in there too and only resulted them in gaining little land claims and the land in between the trenches was called no man's land because anyone who left it would instantly die in the barren and burnt land.

Battle on the eastern front: As the battle on the western front was happening the battle in the eastern front was also taking place Here, Russians and Serbs bat-tled Germans and Austro-Hungarians. Here stalemate and slaughter was very common unlike in the west.

Early fighting:At the beginning of the war, Russian forces had launched an attack into both Austria and Germany. At the end of August, Germany counterattacked near the town of Tannenberg. With a four day battle happening the Germans crushed the Russians and killed over 30,000. The Russians fared better against Austrians and defeated them twice in September but was defeated in December.

Russia struggles: By 1916, Russia’s war effort was near collapse. Unlike the nations of western Europe, Russia had yet to become industrialized. As a result, the Russian army was continually short on food, guns, ammunition, clothes, boots, and blankets. with the short supply in supplies along without trade from the sea they didn't have enough supplies to last. Their only advantage was numbers they lost many troops but were able to gain back their numbers due to their large population. Germany and her allies, however, were concerned with more than just the Eastern or Western Front. As the war raged on, fighting spread beyond Europe to Africa, as well as to Southwest and Southeast Asia. In the years after it began, the massive European conflict indeed became a world war.
