To stop social/cultural isolation it is necessary to mix cultures and create an atmosphere where cultures are accepted and integrated among each other. This does take away from the different cultures and languages spoken in countries, but a melting pot like in America is the best deterrent against people joining ISIS and preventing isolated countries that torture their own inhabitants.

To gain the citizens support the leader lied and said they are at war with the outside world and needed to prevent contact with the outside world, This has led to the death of 1 in 10 North Koreans due to starvation and a leader that is falsely viewed as a god while he kills his own people.

Social/Cultural isolation is an issue present in modern society and literature quite often. In modern society it is used to preserve culture but creates a sense of superiority and enmity within the isolated people/culture. While It is generally seen as a negative concept, Social/Cultural isolation does have its merits. For instance, within a closed system culture is able to flourish and different cultures are born. New food, language, and principals are able to thrive and create diversity. However, Social/Cultural isolation creates different groups of people with different ideologies. This is a precursor for war. In an isolated state people think they are the best and have little knowledge of the outside world. Bigotry is created and cooperation is non-existent where social/cultural isolation is present.

Why it's important in Modern Society

Social/Cultural isolation in modern society is a major cause for disagreement and war. It is shown that being socially/culturally isolated is a high risk factor when joining terrorist organizations. The Boston Herald says "While the U.S. is infamous for its high degree of income inequality, its ‘melting pot’ culture that promotes assimilation may be one of the best deterrents against radicalizing people to join ISIS." This goes to show that being social/cultural isolation is actually detrimental to the stability of society and creates radical behaviors and individuals.
A country that is socially and culturally isolated is North Korea. Their choice to isolate themselves has caused harm tot their own citizens and made them oblivious to the outside world. According to the Huntington Post
“This political stance has caused North Korea to truly become a hermit kingdom because of the huge stigma juche places upon cooperation with outside powers." The lack of cooperation and North Korea's pride has caused them to undergo famine and without the help of other countries and led to the starvation of the people in North Korea. They revere their leader and are misguided on the outside world because they are so isolated. Leaving individuals and countries isolated creates radicals and deplorable human conditions in which many innocent people suffer, and the outside world has no idea what is going on because they are so isolated.

In Persepolis social/cultural isolation is present when Marjane has liberal thoughts and is interested in other culture. In Iran they try to avoid western clothing, speaking, music, food, and thought. This is evidenced when a women says "What do i see here? Michael Jackson! That symbol of decadence?" (Pg 133) to Marjane. They also look down on western clothing, such as when a Iranian man says "You think I'm stupid?!!!...I can tell by your tie! Piece of westernized trash!" (Pg 108). Her story is of her actual experience in Iran, and the Muslim culture is very isolated and they resist influence from the outside. This shows how a piece of clothing of music from an outside culture is despised and viewed as toxic to their culture. In their traditional eyes it is justified because they are scared that outside influence will corrode their moral and cultural values. However this sense of superiority suppresses original thoughts and leads to discrimination of different people. At the end of the story Marjane returns back to Iran but finds that she can not cope in their isolated world and decides to leave and start a new life where she can be accepted for who she is and not conform to the values of others.

In Brave New World there are two different civilizations present. Both are isolated from each other and made sure that travel from the reservation to Bernard's world is impossible. The reservation is described as "Five hundred and sixty-thousand square kilometers, divided into four distinct Sub-Reservations, each surrounded by a high-tension wire fence..." Even though Bernard's society is so advanced they don't know much about the reservation as shown by what an Alpha said, "You ask me how many people live in the Reservation. And i reply"-triumphantly-" I reply that we do not know. We can only guess." The separation of two cultures and groups of people show how the difference in the level of technology when groups are isolated. Both civilizations are unable to understand each other and Bernard's society is disgusted by the culture of the Savages and are too close minded to try to understand them. The social isolation caused the Savages to regress into a hunter gatherer society. While Bernard's society was far more advanced they lacked culture and were very self centered and cocky.
