Desmos is a powerful, web-based graphing calculator and mathematics platform that transforms the way students interact with algebraic concepts, particularly linear equations. Desmos can make abstract mathematical ideas visible, dynamic and interactive, this is its key advantage. This is especially important when teaching concepts within the year 8 mathematical curriculum such as slope, y-intercept, and graphing.

When students first encounter linear equations in the form y = mx + c, many struggle to connect the symbolic representation to its graphical interpretation. Desmos bridges this gap by allowing students to instantly visualise changes in the equation. This is performed by using the intuitive slider tools, students are able to observe in real time how the graph responds to manipulation of m and c values. Students can see how the slope controls the steepness of the line, and how the y-intercept determines its starting point on the y axis, this promotes conceptual understanding of linear equations.

Exploratory and inquiry-based learning is supported by Desmos, students are encouraged to form predictions, assumptions and expectations such as “what will happen if m is negative?”, “what happens by increasing c?” and “When m is increased the slope should get steeper”. Desmos allows students to test these hypotheses immediately, this process of prediction and experimentation develops critical and creative thinking while reinforcing key numeracy skills. This also aligns strongly with contemporary, constructivist pedagogy, where learners build understanding through active engagement and reflection.

Another strength of Desmos is its differentiation capability. Students can work at their own pace, revisiting fundamental concepts or extending themselves through modelling complex scenarios. Teachers can use Desmos Classroom to assign custom activities, monitor student progress in real time, and provide timely feedback. Making Desmos a flexible and inclusive platform for diverse learners.

Desmos is highly accessible for students with physical and learning disabilities, with its website and software being written to conform to the WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines. Desmos’s website has been designed specifically to reduce cognitive load through its clean and uncluttered interface. Its keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility and braille access, supports students with visual or motor impairments. Desmos offers visual, hands-on exploration of mathematical concepts which is beneficial to students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia or dyscalculia. This exploration allows students to grasp patterns and relationships without relying exclusively on symbolic manipulation. Desmos helps reduces writing fatigue and supports multi-sensory learning through the ability to adjust parameters, making mathematics more inclusive and engaging.

From a digital pedagogy perspective, Desmos exemplifies how ICT can be used to expand learning opportunities (APST 2.6) and actively engage students (APST 3.4). It is a safe, web-based tool with minimal access barriers, making it appropriate for classroom use in line with ethical, responsible, and safety ICT practices (APST 4.5). While Desmos can be used without an account, the lesson sequence discussed requires students to have an account to access classroom features and save their work. Desmos demonstrates a strong commitment to complying with international standards such as: COPPA, FERPA, GDPR, CCPA and SOPIPA. While these regulations are not legally enforceable in Australia, their implementation points to a high standard of data protection, giving educators confidence that Desmos handles student information responsibly and securely.

In summary, Desmos doesn’t just replace traditional graphing methods it transforms the learning experience, making it more engaging, interactive, and meaningful. For teaching linear equations, it is an essential tool that supports visual learning, deep understanding, and self-directed learning.

Drag-and-drop tasks in Google Slides are a great resource for teaching linear equations because they make abstract concepts tangible and interactive. Students can visually match equations to graphs, rearrange components of linear equations, or sequence steps in solving problems all through an engaging, hands-on format. This approach supports active learning, reinforces pattern recognition, and allows teachers to easily scaffold tasks for different ability levels, while promoting collaboration and formative assessment in both in-person and remote settings.

Google Forms is a powerful resource for teaching linear equations because it allows for interactive quizzes, immediate feedback, and data collection in a streamlined, accessible format. Teachers can create self-marking multiple-choice or short-answer questions where students solve linear equations or interpret graphs, helping to reinforce key concept. Additionally, Google Forms can be used to present contextual problems (e.g. real-life scenarios involving linear models) and even collect class data for graphing in Desmos.
