         <description><![CDATA[<p>Assessing Phonics/Decoding: One way to assess phonics and decoding is the Starpoint Phonics Assessment involving nonsense words. The SPA was designed as a quick phonics screener. Areas of focus include initial sounds, rimes, syllabication, affixes, or R-controlled. If a student has at least two miscues in one category, they should receive explicitly designed instruction to address that skill.</p><p><br/></p><p>Instructional Strategy: One instructional strategy is called Letter-Sound Cards. The purpose is to help students remember individual and combination sounds (digraphs and blends). The key letter/sound is written on one side of the card, and word (preferably noun) exemplifying the sound is on the flip side.</p>]]></description>
