What was the political, religious, intellectual, and cultural significance of Salons for women during the Enlightenment?

During the Enlightenment, coffee shops and other meeting places were kept away from women, so women decided to create their own meeting places and salons. At these salons, women would discuss many topics like how to make their town better, events that were currently happening, and events of the past. These salons were very significant politically, religiously, intellectually, and culturally. It was intellectually significant because women would converse with each other and with other people who were highly educated. The salons were also culturally important because many painters and writers would go to the salons. This caused discussions to include cultural topics as well. The salons were politically significant because salons gave women an opportunity to participate in political dialogue. Finally, salons were important religiously. In the salons, the women would talk about the rapidly changing beliefs in the Catholic Church, and it caused many people to no longer accept religious doctrines.

.

How did the Enlightenment thinkers’ works reflect (not impact) the political, religious, educational, and cultural realities of 16th - 18th century Europe?

Mary Wollstonecraft's works reflected the political, religious, educational, and cultural realities of 16th - 18th century Europe because her novels and works described the inequality between men and women. In her novel A Vindication of the Rights of Women she argues that women should be educated to the same extent as men. This reflects how women were treated at the time because women were not given the same opportunities and voice. For example, women were not allowed to have a say politically; however, they would meet in salons so that they could discuss their opinions and beliefs.

How did the Enlightenment build upon the Reformation and the Renaissance?

The Enlightenment built upon the Renaissance and the Reformation because, like the Renaissance humanists and Protestants during the Reformation, Enlightenment thinkers rejected authority and upheld the freedom of individuals to think for themselves. In the Renaissance, the was a new philosophy called humanism that was created. Humanism was an idea that slightly questioned the church. This philosophy led to the Reformation, which questioned the church and Catholicism completely. Then came the Enlightenment period, which questioned religion in general, and this led to people questioning their society and the people in power.
