The character is driven by personal ordeals that fuel her insecurities. The story is told through first person perspective, so the reader is able to perceive all of the protagonist's negative thoughts. "Maybe because I’m skinny, maybe because she doesn’t like me ..." (9). Personal bias is depicted throughout the story.

How do the details in the text convey or reveal one or more aspects of a setting?

Several details throughout the passage reveal that the setting takes place in school. "Not mine, not mine, not mine, but Mrs. Price is already turning to page thirty-two, and math problem number four. I don’t know why but all of a sudden I’m feeling sick inside" (12). It is evident that Mrs. Price is her teacher and that they are doing school work.

How does the setting affect readers of the text?

The setting affects the readers in the text because it makes them relate to the protagonist. The setting was set as a point of connection to incite compassion. "I move the red sweater to the corner of my desk with my ruler. I move my pencil and books and eraser as far from it as possible. I even move my chair a little to the right" (13). The vast description of the setting allows for a tone of tension to illustrate how frustrated the protagonist feels.

The sequence of events and manner in which the text presents the events are through a stream of consciousness. The story is told through a fluid and sequential order of events. "Only today I wish I didn’t have only eleven years rattling inside me like pennies in a tin Band-Aid box" (5).

The quote relates to how the protagonist follows the story through her mind.

The narrator's distance from the events of a narrative affect the details and information presented to the reader by elongating the pacing. The narrator talks about a small event and goes into full detail, therefore fully elaborating into her feelings in that current situation. "Because the way you grow old is kind of like an onion or like the rings inside a tree trunk or like my little wooden dolls that fit one inside the other, each year inside the next one. That’s how being eleven years old is" (3).
The pacing and distance allows for a vast flood of information for the reader.
