Ways Water Skiers Can Improve Their Balance

James Dixon, previously of Mountain Brook, Alabama, oversees the southeast region of the Birmingham-based Stifel Financial Corporation as managing director. When he is not busy fulfilling his professional responsibilities, former Mountain Brook resident James Dixon enjoys waterskiing.

One of the most important water skiing abilities is maintaining balance. Below are a few ways to promote good balance when on the water:

- Use a slack line: this nylon line ties to two anchor point and provides water skiers with the opportunity to improve their balance while off the water. Successfully spinning, walking, and standing on a slack line does wonders for water skiers’ balance.

- Practice yoga: another way skiers can improve balance is by practicing yoga. The main focus of yoga is improving muscle strength, flexibility, and stability. These aspects are all extremely important for staying balanced atop water skis.

- Maintain neutral positioning: while on the water, water skiers must start off with neutral positioning. This type of stance places the hips directly above the feet and keeps the hips perpendicular to the ski. From this position, skiers may find it eaier to move around while staying balanced.

- Start from the feet: when moving on the water, skiers should start at the bottom of their body. This means beginning a movement at the feet and allowing the rest of the body to follow behind. Following this method of moving keeps skiers in control and helps them stay above the ski.
