What is the impact of personalising the news on the self and the community? What are the positive/negative effects?
Personalising news for myself causes me to limit the type of news that I am being exposed to. However, by personalising the news for myself, it is a lot easier to find the type of news that I normally seach for. When a lot of people do the same thing by only reading what they like/choose to read, then other news would get neglected. This would cause the limitations on the amount of news that we read and know off.

Consider how news is personalised for you. Consider how news is personalised in the news.
For me, news is personalised by my interests. For example, I do not really like reading news about the politics as I find them quite boring. In the news, some journalists choose to omit the perspectives of certain people when interviewing people. They only choose to write news that have the most impact on people. This limits the perspectives to the same piece of news. News are also categorised in some newspapers such as The Straits Times. Sometimes, this might have caused some readers like me to skip certain parts of the newspaper and just focus on reading what we like.

If we live in a filter bubble, how do we break out of the filter bubble?
We break out of the filter bubble by choosing to read newspapers from different countries such as BBC or The Washington Times. Also, we could also try to read other sections of The Straits Times, such as Home or the Sports section instead of just the main paper.

However personalised news also have a negative impact as the reader will not be able to know what else is happening around the worked, creating a filter bubble. News are personalised for us by using the data on the contents of the sites we visit the most often and are most interested in. Consider how news is personalised for you. Consider how news is personalised in the news.

By personalising the news, we are actually enclosing ourselves in our own filter bubble. We have the power to choose what our media diet should be, and thus we will always tend to read our preferred ‘genre’ of news. This will result in our own self being unable to break out of our filter bubble and only knowing about what articles he/she has just read. If an entire community reads news from a certain news publisher, they might read news that are written only in one perspective and they might not be able to think differently about a certain issue.

News is personalised for me using the previous sites that I have accessed, the posts that I liked, and the location I am in (country/region). News might also be personalised by the journalist, as the article might be written from only one perspective.

b) If we live in a filter bubble? How do we break out of the filter bubble?

If we really want to break out of the filter bubble, we need to be flexible and read all types of news (inclusive of news that are appealing and not appealing to us). We can also try to read from different news sources, as they might discuss about a certain topic in a different light. We can also change our location services to different countries. By doing so, we can successfully break out of the filter bubble, and also maintain a balanced media diet.

a) Personalising news can be both good and bad. When you personalise news, you can read news that you're interested in or that may affect you. When you live in Singapore, the piece of news that you may be interested in is likely relating to Singapore or the areas around. Personalised news also save time because you do not need to choose your news anymore. Also, when you 'like' someone's perspective, you have almost the same moral values as the, and you think alike. However, personalised news can also be bad since when you only read the news that you like, i.e., from only one perspective, you may be led into thinking things that are not right, accurate or you may not get to see a piece of news at all, because it may be banned from this publisher. News can shape morals and way of living, so news and other influences are important.

b) One way to break out of a filter bubble is to meet new people who have different perspective as you, so they will recommend different pieces of news for you. Or the person can get news from different sources which have different perspectives so that they can use their sense of right and wrong to figure out their perspective on the matter.

This is a negative effect of personalising news as only reading the topics that we are interested in limits our mindset and knowledge of certain issues the rest of the world are facing. For example, if we are only interested in reading about things happening in a local context, we would not know what else is happening around the world and would not even know who Donald Trump is.

a)What is the impact of personalizing the news on the self and the community? What are the positive/negative effects? Consider how news is personalised for you. Consider how news is personalised in the news.
Personalization has both pros and cons to it. A person who personalizes his/her own news is able to read the news of their choice, and read up on subjects which they have an interest in. This may encourage them to read the news more often because what they are reading is what they are interested in. Hence, they may be more aware of what is happening in the world. Personalization could also give the person the ability to choose their news sources. For example, someone could choose to follow a verified account which has a reputation of giving reliable and true news instead of following a news account which may not be as reliable. However, this may result in them living in a filter bubble, as they may only read the news which show up on their feed, and may not bother to read other news. Hence, the information that they receive might not be very well-rounded.

For me, news is personalized based on the accounts which I follow on social media. This allows me to choose what kind of content that I want on my feed.

News articles may contain tags which briefly shows what the article may be about. These tags could be used to personalize one's news. The more a person searches up a certain tag, the more the news with that certain tag may appear on their feed. Another way of personalizing news could be through the accounts which a person follows on social media.

b) If we live in a filter bubble? How do we break out of the filter bubble?
I suppose that we may live in a filter bubble. We could break out of this filter bubble by going to various news sites from other countries, where their perspectives may be different from ours, or where the types of news that they report may be different. We could also break out of our filter bubble by socializing with people from different background, and people which may have different views from us.

a) The pros of personalising news is that it is more convenient for us to search for the news we are interested to read. However, if we continue to personalise the news and live in a filter bubble, we may be oblivious to what is happening outside the filter bubble and we might only have one perspective of the world around us. We will only know about the things that are relevant in our space and community but not about the things outside of it. This can make us develop certain assumptions. For example, if poverty is not necessarily an important part in my country, then it does not exist, which is not true.

b) we can break out of the filter bubble by exploring other sources of information that are reliable as well. We should not always stick to the same source of news or information as that source might only give us specific types of news. Instead of only reading about the things going on in Singapore, we can search up articles about other countries in the world. We can change our location service so that we would be receiving news from all areas of the world.
We can explore news sources like BBC News which provide us with international news.
Other than location wise, we can also try to read past certain sections of the newspaper. For example, if we only read the Sports section of the newspaper, we can try reading World or the part about politics and we might end up developing in interest we never knew we had since we stayed in a filter bubble all this while.

a) News is personalised by our interests, location, web history etc. When news is personalised, the person who reads that type of news will stay reading that kind of news and thus they don't really read up on other kinds of news and only the type of news they read since the browser will help to feed them news they are interested in. For example, a students always searches articles on their idols, the search optimisation on the browser will keep 'feeding' the student news about her idol and she will keep only reading that type of news and will not be exposed to any other types of news. When that happens, she will be less informed about things happening in other areas. However, personalised news is definitely more appealing to everyone as they get to read something that is in their interest zone. It is also easily accessible and more fun for the reader since it interests them. This then encourages them to keep reading content they like and keep them happy and occupied.

To break out of the filter bubble, we can make an effort to explore other areas and perspectives. We should not just read up on the articles we are interested in but also news we don't really read often or are exposed to. Once we do this, our search engine and browser will also then optimise our feeds to suit what we read and in time, our feeds will be filled with variety of different news and hence, we will also break out of our filter bubble.

a) What is the impact of personalising the news on the self and the community? What are the positive/negative effects? Consider how news is personalised for you. Consider how news is personalised in the news.

There are advantages and disadvantages of having the news personalised. I feel that a positive effect of personalising the news is being able to access the news that we are interested in easier and quicker. You would also be more informed about the topic that interests you. However, some may argue that having personalised news is unhealthy and that we would be trapped in a filter bubble, that would be one downside of having personalised news. I think that with personalised news, the pieces of news that we read would only be targeting a certain topic. The viewpoints may be biased and we would not get complete coverage of what is happening in the world. When we read personalised news, we may only think of a particular situation from one point of view and not see the situation form other perspectives. Once media platforms such as, google and youtube, go by your preferences and personalise the news for you, you would constantly be receiving news of certain topics with certain viewpoints, which would not be very well-rounded.

One instance where the news is personalised for me would be when I use the Channel NewsAsia app on my phone. I would usually browse through the news that appears first when I am on the train going home. The news that is shown first would be the personalised news and the topics that I usually read. I think that this would encourage me to read more about a topic of my interest but I would only read about those few topics as I do not have to time to look through the other categories of news.

When we buy The Straits Times newspaper, it is sorted into 5 different sections, The Main section, the Home section, the Life section, the Business section and the classified section. All the different sections have categorised pieces of news. Thus, if a reader wants to local news only, he would go to the Home section and read the news there. This is one example of news being personalised within the news.

b) If we live in a filter bubble? How do we break out of the filter bubble?

I think living in a filter bubble means that you only read certain topics of news. I think that we can break out of this filter bubble by one, reading news from foreign newspapers such as the New York Times to get different perspectives of news stories all around the world and not have a biased opinion on a situation. Another way that we can break out of our filter filter bubble would be taking the time to read the different sections of the local newspaper, like The Straits Times. For example, if you constantly read the Home section only, you could consider reading more articles in the Business and life sections so that you are exposed to the different news topics and different types of news to break out of our filter bubble.

I feel that having a personalized news would not necessarily be all true and sometimes because we are so upset with this person that we completely leave out some details and only write down the bad things that they had done. I get articles on Trump and what he's doing in America but they're always from a certain point of view and they all have a personal opinion about him (he's bad, he's good) and the articles are written from a certain biased perspective rather than stating the facts and letting the reader decide. That is because it is personalised to what I like to read as I myself do have a biased opinion about Trump.

If we live in a filter bubble? How do we break out of the filter bubble?

We can start by reading other types of news and looking for things we don't normally look for. If we want to find out more there are always ways to, it's very simple in this age of technology, we just have to know what we want, and we can search for it. If we don't want something, why would we look for it? If we want to break out of our filter bubble, we can, but some people don't mind.

Consider how news is personalised in the news. b) If we live in a filter bubble? How do we break out of the filter bubble?
a) Personalizing news based on one's interest does not give them the news that are around the world but just based in their own interests, search history. It will not give the user what type of news they they will access because everything will be about the things that you will want to look at, they do not really give you website based on the things there are new to you. We will always look at the same type of news everyday. When you always look at news related to politics, you will seldom receive news about the nature environment. They also give news that are popular, news that many people read. The positive effects is that they will interest you to look at that news and you will also see what people normally want to see based on their popularity. The negative effect is that you will not be able to look at news that are around the world.

a) What is the impact of personalising the news on the self and the community? What are the positive/negative effects?

Personalising the news will cause us to read certain types of news only. This means that we might miss out certain top stories that are happening round the world. We would not be able to get the full idea of what is happening in Singapore or in the other parts of the world. Sometimes, we might only listen to a one-sided piece of news, which could make it unreliable. These are the negative effects in personalising the news. The positive effects of personalising the news is that we are able to read articles that we are interested in the moment we click on the link.

Consider how news is personalised for you. Consider how news is personalised in the news.

Based on what we click on the internet, the internet filters and personalise our search results. Thus the internet gives us what they think we want to see, instead of what we need to see.

b) If we live in a filter bubble? How do we break out of the filter bubble?
We can read the hardcopy version of the newspaper, instead of the online version. The hardcopy version of Newspapers have a gatekeeper, which makes sure that the news that we receive is standardised and does not contain any bias and remains a neutral perspective.
