Videoconferencing tools were their link with their loved ones, where the hardware and connectivity existed.

Usage gap is explained by van Dijk (2020) as "a systematic use of the Internet for particular goals by people of higher social class (education, income, and property) and status (social position and cultural resources) as compared to those of lower social class and status" (124). He argues that the usage gap is more critical for society than the knowledge gap because knowledge gap concerns “mental categories – learning – in using mass media” but usage gap “also refers to behavior and activities in using the Internet and other digital media. The latter are multifunctional and are drawn on for all activities in society and daily life. The behavioral and systemic effects of the usage gap are much more important than the learning effects of the knowledge gap (124).
