         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>The first schools were started by the Sumerians in southern Mesopotamia. 😊 who was taught&nbsp; ? Education was only for the elite- mainly only the rich, and boys attended due to the high cost to attend.&nbsp;<br>The sons of the nobility, government officials, priests and rich merchants went to school. Boys started school around 7-8 years old. Girls did not learn to read or write unless they were a king’s daughters or were training as priestesses.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>what was taught ? what was the main focus -?<br><br><br>Record keeping was important to ancient Mesopotamians. They wrote everything down . There language was cuneiform.<br><br>Students learned the complicated cuneiform script by constant practice on their clay tablets<br><br>Schools where attached to temples <br><br>Students needed to do a "perfect job" or face harsh punishment <br><br>"Teachers, mostly former scribes or priests, were harsh disciplinarians; mistakes were often punished by whipping.
