It was 381 days and it led to Martin Luther King being on of the most important leaders in the civil rights movement. The event that triggered the boycott was when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white person. African Americans we to only sit in the back of the bus and give up their seat if there were no more remaining seats left in the front. So when Parks refused to give up her seat, she was sent to jail. Parks was not the first person to refuse to give up her seat for a white person, but her arrest was a chance for civil rights leaders to challenge local segregation laws. Many of the residents who rode the Montgomery bus system were African American, so they knew that this boycott would be effective.
