I think the difference between mental illness and insanity is the fact that insanity is felt on a more intense level. More like you can’t control your actions after a while. It might start of as mental illness such as a personality disorder or just ptsd but if untreated could possibly turn into insanity. Mental illness could mean a lot of things like fear, sadness, etc. but I don’t think it makes you insane to be sad, angry or paranoid.

Mental illness is a broader term than insanity. Mental illness can include both severe and milder forms of mental problems such as anxiety disorders and mil depressions. Insanity is usually reserved for describing severe conditions involving psychotic like breaks with reality.

I believe Mental Illness is a more modernized term of Insanity. Insanity wouldn’t be classified as a Mental Illness in our generation as things fall under Categories now and are based off of Diagnosis. Yet, I do believe that Insanity could be considered a Mental Disorder at its most severe stage.
