Personally I think the most important takeaway was showing things such as the toxic male and female gaze. Although I was already aware of these facts, showing them in the light like this helps more people realize how awful it truly is.

One of the biggest take aways I found out from this class was timing in writing. Only certain things work well when they're timed correctly, such as plot twists, character developments, etc. But, you cannot have any of that without timing.

When looking at "Symbols and Signs" we see how growing up the parents of the boy were not treating him the best however as he would be on the verge of death that is when they would later show how much they loved him and were grieving. Also showing in other terms people do not tend to realize what they have once it is gone.

The main rhetorical analysis skills I learned were surrounding ethos pathos and logos. I feel like a gained a useful understanding of how to look at literature and be able to analyze it in a productive way, that often has use in my life + being able to reverse engineer it and write better with those skills in mind has been a good skill to learn.

By understanding the way methods are used in our content, we as consumers are able to recognize either intentional or unintentional messages the pieces of work are trying to convey. For example, an ad may be using pathos but if you aren't aware you could get swayed by this method. It's important to be aware of these rhetorical skills because they're strong indicators of what you're actually watching/reading.

All of these literary devices have helped us better understand the reading material, but ultimately discover the rhetoric of the mind. The discussion on motivation was one of my biggest takeaways because we learned people can do so much due to motivation and create so many amazing things during the lowest part of their lives.

I learned that there's often a deeper meaning to a story or the characters within it due to Ethos, Pathos, Logos, and other things we learned, like character motivation. It's as though literature isn't always what we think it is on the surface, but rather, many underlying factors contribute to the story and the message really is.

We have definitely discussed ethos, pathos, and logos at length; however, I really believe it is incredibly important. As a student, being able to analyze a text or situation using these factors makes such a huge difference. In my own opinion, employing these contrasting argumentative/persuasive techniques helps to understand the topic better. In the reverse, it is interesting to see how a story can be written to emphasize one of these elements more than another.

When consuming media after our lessons on rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos, I often notice these aspects more often. Kairos to me is the one I notice the most and what I find the most interesting in rhetoric. In current times, the importance of kairos (timing) is very prevalent especially in politics such as Starbucks boycott, etc.

I think timing and the backgrounds of what is written sort of dictates the angle which the author is coming at. You can see that authors are often influenced by the world that surrounds them, and their works will often reflect that world. Like with "Signs and Symbols" or Veronika Decides to Die, the authors often write in a way that mirror the real world circumstances they undergo but also their experiences and how it shapes their views.

My most important takeaway would probably be exigence. I think that the most important texts are so popular and important because they are relevant to things that are happening in the real world. Exigence is also what keeps texts so relevant, because without exigence, we would have no guide on how to approach situations when they arise. Texts are inspired by things that happen around the author and in turn the author provides a viewpoint on those events.

Ethos (credibility), pathos (emotional appeal), and logos (logic) are the essential elements of rhetoric and persuasion and are my most significant takeaways. Through this class, I learned to understand these deivdes truly. When learning new information, I can correctly evaluate the source's ethos, the emotion (pathos) of the piece, and the logical reasoning (logos) within the arguments presented.

Something I thought about while doing these presentations was how much character archetypes influence the rhetoric of movies. There are formulaic ways to make sure a movie is well received. By using tropes to convey a message, movies are easily digestible and usually well-received by audiences. On the other hand, movies that try to break from these tropes can either be widely successful or fall completely short. Sometimes stepping outside of the comfort zone of an audience member is beneficial for a piece while other times it makes pieces flop entirely.

The biggest take away I got was how dark and mundane stories can sometimes give the biggest insight to real world issues. I learned that the lack of an "exciting" storyline can make the reader absorb the story and actively compare to their own lives, giving light to real world issues the author is trying to illustrate.
