He had said in his narrative "every tone was a testimony against slavery, and a prayer to God for deliverance from chains. The hearing of those wild notes always depressed my spirit, always filled me with ineffable sadness." (Douglass 12)

Fredrick Douglass is using pathos to help the reader better understand the kind of pain slaves had to go through and how much of a toll it took on their lives. Because those who had experienced it firsthand because of their given situation, it is important for Douglass to explain it in his story to enlighten readers. It is important for people to understand what slaves had gone through so time doesn't ever repeat itself.

Because of this, it was much easier for him to tell his story because he had experienced it, and he has more credibility for being a slave speaking on the subject of slavery.

Fredrick Douglass made a reference to the section of the Bible that stated "God cursed ham", Ham being an African man who had angered God, in which God had cursed him and his descendants into slavery. This was used as justification for slavery, but Douglass had stated the slaves were no longer descendants of Ham because they had become mulatto children. Overtime, the white genes in those children became more apparent, therefore the Bible could no longer be used to justify slavery.

In his narrative, Douglass states "it will do away with the force of this argument, that God cursed Ham, and therefore American slavery is right. If linear descendants of Ham are alone to be scriturally enslaved, it is certain that slavery in the South must soon become unscriptual; for thousands are ushered into the world, annually, who, like myself, owe their existence to white fathers, and whose fathers most frequently their own masters."

Fredrick Douglass talks about his experience as a slave, including the lack of knowledge he was granted being one; he states that,"I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know little of their ages as horses know theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant."
