Teddy Roosevelt and other progressive presidents worked with John Muir to change the role of the government and the environment by enacting conservation policies and establishing national parks. Roosevelt was a strong proponent of conservation and worked with Muir to preserve natural resources and establish national parks. He signed the Antiquities Act, which allowed him to designate national monuments and protect public lands (Library Of Congress, 2023, para 2). Roosevelt also established the United States Forest Service, which was responsible for managing public lands and protecting natural resources. Similarly, other progressive presidents such as Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt continued to support conservation policies and establish national parks. Their efforts helped to preserve natural resources and protect the environment for future generations.

One of the most celebrated camping trips in American history occurred in 1903 when President Roosevelt spent several days exploring Yosemite with renown naturalist John Muir. Finding common ground on their passion for nature, the two men discussed the importance of preserving unique landscapes and wildlife. Energized by the experience, Roosevelt worked to make Muir’s Yosemite dream a reality by eventually adding Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove to Yosemite National Park.

Conservation is the sustainable use and management of natural resources, such as forests, water, and wildlife. Conservationists believe that natural resources should be used in a way that is environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable. They aim to balance human needs with the needs of the natural environment. With the end goal of using natural resources while ensuring they are not compromising the resources for generations to come. Preservationists believe that nature should be protected for its own sake, independent of human needs or desires. They advocate for the complete protection of natural areas from human interference. Preservationists believe that natural areas have intrinsic value and should be preserved in their natural state, even if this means limiting human access. Preservationists often advocate for establishing national parks, wilderness areas, and other protected areas. Within the context of the 20th century, there were 2 known advocates with openly opposing opinions, Gifford Pinchot and John Muir. Gifford Pinchot was a conservationist who believed in the sustainable use and management of natural resources for the benefit of society. He advocated for the creation of national forests, which the government would manage to ensure that they were used in a responsible and sustainable way. He was actually the first chief of the US Forest Service and was responsible for the creation of the forest product labs. " But Pinchot’s success was not at the expense of John Muir’s preservation legacy aimed at permitting little to no industrial profit from the federal lands that have become our National Parks."(US Forest Service, 2016) He advocated for the complete protection of natural areas from human interference. Muir was instrumental in the establishment of Yosemite National Park and other protected areas such as Yellowstone and Shenanandoah. Although these viewpoints seem at odds, they actually work hand-in-hand. Together conservation and preservation exist to create a more sustainable future for years to come. While also keeping our public lands "open and productive."(US Forest Service, 2016)

Conservation versus Preservation? | US Forest Service

Conservation versus Preservation? | US Forest Service.

The United States is a country that values both conservation and preservation of natural resources.
