Imagery - "Why is your mouth all green?"

The imagery in the last stanza reflects the idea in the poem that the girl is acting like a horse which means she is being childish. This shows her imagination and freedom of youth as she doesn't want to grow up or conform to society. In sentence 61, her mother says, "Go tie back your hair." She represents society and social standards, forcing her to grow up.

The poem is split into 3 lines per stanza, creating 21 stanzas and 64 lines. This makes the poem look choppy and is made to be read fast. The author might have chosen this structure in order to emphasize the shortness of childhood and how fast it passes by. The last stanza is the only one with 4 lines instead of 3. This change could signify a change within the girl, such as growing up.

"Yet they were shaped like a horse.

My hair flopped to the side

like the mane of a horse in the wind."

The image shows the girl as a centaur/horse, calling her hair her mane. This shows the girl's imagination and creativity, she truly believes she is a horse and even acts like one. This represents her clinging onto her childhood and youth, not wanting to grow up and risk not being in her own world.
