In this program they laid out what they wanted to accomplish. Their main goal was the education of black. This included everything from grade school to medical school. The Black Panthers believed in self defence and thought that all black people should be armed. A Black Panther member would stand next to anyone being arrested and they would have law book in one hand and a gun in the other just to make sure the person was being treated fairly. They also became very active in their communities, often hosting breakfasts for children. In 1967 a black man in the neighboring city of Richmond was killed by police and the Panthers organized massive protest rallies against the local sheriff. The Panthers headed to Sacramento and charged into the state building, while carrying weapons, to deliver a prepared speech decrying the racist California legislature which catapulted the Black Panthers to national prominence. The Panthers left a mixed legacy because they represented what many white Americans feared most, the rise of a militant black power group. He was actively involved in the party and clashed with the law several times. Newton was arrested in 1967 for killing an Oakland police officer. He was freed in 1970. Later he fled to Cuba in 1974 to escape 2 murder charges but returned and the charges were dropped. He met Huey Newton at a rally protesting the Cuban blockade. Earlier in his life Seale joined the U.S Air Force but was discharged in 1959 following an incident with a superior officer. He was to 4 years in court for contempt in court. He was also tried for the murder of a fellow panther but wasn't convicted. After his release from prison Seale renounced violence and tried to change the Black Panthers methods in an attempt to regain support and belief in the Panthers.
