Alec finds some kind of moss on the rocks, and he thinks about the moss from biology class that looked exactly like the moss he found. Alec picked it up and tasted it, and it was the exact same. So he took all of the moss he could find, washed it, then dried it, and then ate some of it and gave some of the moss to the horse.
Alec learned to not keep things just for yourself. He later on washes them thurly and lets them dry, he tastes as his face brights up from them tasting good, a  awhile he eats till hes full and cant eat anymore. He sees the horse coming back and takes some food and runs back to his shelter, as he watches the horse drink and eat. He later realises that he didnt need to kill the horse for food and he would later on find food for him and the horse.

Alec remembers something he learned in school. He remembered that there was a type of seaweed that was edible. which he went to get and cleaned, dried. he ate it and wasn't starving anymore. He left some for the Stallion to eat.
He learned that, when he thought there was no way out he found a solution.
What we can learn from this: when things get hard don ´ t give up because there ´ s always a solution to every problem.
