Learn about Maria's plight at the hands of Drake and his crew on board the Golden Hind; it is shocking. It is thought to have inspired Shakespeare in The Tempest. More recently, author Nikky Marmery has novelised Maria's time on the ship. Read this article by Nikki Marmery about her novel 'On Wilder Seas' and how she was inspired to give Maria a voice.

During the 'Age of Discovery', when Drake returned from circumnavigating the world on the Golden Hind, Shakespeare was just sixteen years old. It is highly likely that Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' was inspired by tales of discovery, conquest and colonisation. It is a castaway story involving a shipwreck and the survival of individuals and small groups of Europeans in a remote locale, an island. Unwittingly, 'The Tempest' fulfils the key conventions of an emerging literary genre that 96 years later was coined: the robinsonade.

Robinsonade is a literary genre that takes its name from this 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. The literary form came generally to be associated with tales of male exploration, adventure and survival in a castaway setting. However, these stories are not just about adventure and survival. They are also stories about colonialism with the male protagonist making a typically European home away from home. Even 200 years later, colonial and imperialist ideologies continue to feature in more modern robinsonade novels.

Gulliver’s Travels was an immediate success upon its first publication in 1726. Since then, it has never been out of print.

Gulliver’s Travels satirizes the form of the travel narrative, a popular literary genre that started with Richard Hakluyt’s Voyages in 1589 and experienced immense popularity in eighteenth-century England through best-selling diaries and first-person accounts by explorers such as Captain James Cook. At the time, people were eager to hear about cultures and people in the faraway lands where explorers were claiming colonies for England. It's clear to see how the travel narrative shares a great deal of common ground with the robinsonade genre.

During the first half of the eighteenth century, classic castaway narratives were concerned with a solitary male protagonist who overcomes a series of hardships and eventually reproduces a recognisably and comfortably European existence on an island he then claims as his own.

However, mid-century authors began to explore possibilities of different types of protagonists, starting with the solitary female Crusoe figure. Female robinsonades were most popular in Germany with over sixteen female castaway stories published before the year 1800. In comparison, only three English female robinsonades were published in England. Despite being less popular than the male robinsonades, there was still significant interest in them. In fact, Hannah Hewitt: or the Female Crusoe was so popular that it was reproduced as a musical drama at London's theatre royal in 1798.

M. Ballantine's The Coral Island (1857), Captain Frederick Marryat's The Little Savage (1848) and Jeffrys Taylor's The Young Islanders (1842). Given their context, it is not surprising that these novels disseminate imperialist and colonial attitudes.

Male authors also dominate the genre.

Island of the Blue Dolphins tells the story of a 12-year-old girl named Karana, who is stranded alone for years on an island off the California coast.
