In his autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass," Frederick Douglass provides a very clear example of ethos by describing in detail what he had scene as he states:"He then told her to cross her hands, calling her at the same time a d-d b-h. After crossing her hands, he tied them with a strong rope, and led her to a stool under a large hook in the joist, put in for the purpose. He made her get upon the stool, and tied her hands to the hook. She now stood fair for his infernal purpose. Her arms were stretched up at their full length, so that she stood upon the ends of her toes. He then said to her, "Now, you d-d b-h, I'll learn you how to disobey my orders!" and after rolling up his sleeves, he commenced to lay on the heavy cow skin, and soon the warm, red blood (amid heart-rending shrieks from her, and horrid oaths from him) came dripping to the floor" (Douglass 4).

In the autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass," the author Fredrick Douglass uses logos as a tool to give his audience the evidence needed to support his main claim. One example of logos in his autobiography is "Colonel Lloyd could not brook any contradiction from a slave. When he spoke, a slave must stand, listen, and tremble; and such was literally the case. I have seen Colonel Lloyd make old Barney, a man between fifty and sixty years of age, uncover his bald head, kneel down upon the cold, damp ground, and receive upon his naked and toil-worn shoulders more than thirty lashes at the time" (Douglass 10).

The textual evidence that I provided is an example logos because Douglass uses numbers and names as and many other details as evidence for the readers that he is telling the truth. From the beginning of his autobiography, Douglass evokes logos from his readers by constantly providing them with numerated evidence and names such as the names of the plantations and their owners in addition to the extremely specific descriptions of the events happening at that time.

The textual evidence that I provided is an example of ethos because Douglass uses his past and him being a slave to give him a high position on the topic and having the ability to influence his audience. Since Douglass have seen this as a child, he evokes ethos from his audience by telling them that he know more than what they know and he have experienced it all and that he knows its impact on the society and everything around. Him being a slave makes the people believe in what he says because he shows the signs of greater knowing about the topic.

The textual evidence that I provided is an example of pathos because Douglass is trying to stimulate the audience's emotions by telling them how how hard the slaves would get whipped that even the iron heart master felt remorse. When reading, I was able to imagine what it would feel like to get whipped and tortured for a simple thing. Douglass evokes pathos from his readers by providing scene with every little details which allow the reader to imagine himself being in the time and place and being able relate to the enslaved Africans.
