If that's not 'healthy' I'm not telling children they can't eat it. At least they will have something in their belly. Thankfully we have the SLA to provide a hot meal to students who avail of it each day. In a center city school the issue is not only teaching children about 'healthy' choices, but the parents/guardians need to be educated as well. The historical growing / producing of food as self -subsistence in SS curriculum.  The science of producing crops in Science.  Health, Phys Ed, Home Economics, Mathematics...all can include healthy living elements.

If we cannot police what is brought in from home, then families will resort to buying these items outside and bringing them in. Many school sports teams rely on the fundraising from canteens to be be able to participate in tournaments. By restricting what can be sold, you could be restricting the amount of physical activity a team would get. This concept is detailed in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs; the pyramid of needs that one must have met in order to reach self-actualization. If schools can build those base blocks of individual development, the whole child as a learner can be achieved. This can be easily embedded into a School Development Template that is structured methodically and visually. Our school is smack dab in the middle of fast food outlets. They don't go out for lunch but will next year. This will impact their eating choices. We need to provide children more opportunities to grow their own food and prepare meals in school as they may not have the exposure to healthy food options at home. We know this as we have a very comprehensive school breakfast program in our school and the School Lunch program. We also provided food to our families during the many pandemic shutdowns. Educating our students is one thing, but involvement from families is another. School teams cannot do that heavy task on their own.
