Introduction- SOAPS

This song appears to have Luke Combs as the speaker. However, in looking at his background information, it does not appear that there is a specific occasion for this song. He was dating Nicole Hocking in 2016, and is now married to her as of this year.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_Combs

His targeted audience is people going through relationship hardships. His purpose for creating the song was so people could know that they are not alone through hard times because other people experience it as well, as well as saying if you lose some ones they can be gone forever. This then leads to the subject: a break up can mean losing someone forever.

THESIS for Analysis

Luke Combs is acting as the speaker and attempts to tell people going through relationship hardships that they are not the only ones that go through events like that. They use the appeals of relatability and logos, ethos, and pathos in the lyrics and the appeals of lighting and reoccurring locations in the video to get this message across. In analyzing the lyrics and video, it appears that their use of appeals is effective in convincing their intended audience.

Lyrics Analysis- Ethos

Since this song tells a story its easier to look at the Lyrics to analyze it and connect the song to the three basic appeals.
ETHOS- In the chorus when Combs says "I lied when I said, 'I'm leaving

and not coming back'". This uses ethos to show what kind of person he is. He is wanting to leave but wants to go back just as bad. He is saying that he really wanted to leave her, but the emotions overtook him, and he is going back. Later on n the chores Combs says "maybe it’s a mistake, hit the

brakes, I'm moving on". He is trying to say that he is making a mistake in going back because he has already started to move on from her. This is telling the audience that sometimes you need to take a step back and rethink choices.

Lyric Analysis- Pathos

PATHOS- In looking at how Combs uses emotions in his lyrics, we can first look at his word selections. In the chorus Combs says "I'm dying inside". This is a way of him saying he is loosing himself and no one can tell because it's internal. In one of the verses he says "Might be the whiskey or midnight rain, but everywhere I go I still see your face" is a way of him saying everything reminds him of her nd the better times and some more sad emotions about the mistakes. In the chorus Combs says "Dial its up, everything I want to say, but I'm still one number away" he is saying he knows what he wants to say but his emotions are keeping him from actually finishing him from dialing the number.

Lyric Analysis- Logos

LOGOS- Many musicians focus on pathos to hold more emotion to the song, some musicians will use logos to help show the logic behind some aspects of the song. When Combs says "Drown out the noise" he is saying that he does anything to ignore the excess voices or thoughts in his head. The line "Got my head in a mess" is talking about how the end of a relationship or the lose of a loved one can cause your thoughts to be in a mess along with your emotions effecting how you are thinking. In the line that says "Are you changing the station replacing our favorite song?" He is trying to figure out f she is moving on already behind not listing to their song. This shows the audience you can move on faster by not listing to songs that remind you of the person you lost.
