Raphael believed that the only right way to plan a masterpiece was to draw an exact plan of what the painting would look like. Many of these drawings survived to this day. This engraving shown below is of a drawing by Raphael depicting the tragic character Lucretia before her death.

This painting is thought to be a self portrait of younger Raphael, although art historians may never know for sure. Portrait of a Young Man was stolen by Nazis in WWII and has not been recovered. It is considered the most important piece of Renaissance art missing today.

This portrait by Raphael from 1512 depicts Pope Julius II in a way new to all papal portraits. While ones that came before were usually a painting of the Pope from the shoulders up facing forward in the painting, this one shows the Pope lost in though. Many who saw this painting described it as fearfully life-like.

Housed in the Pantheon in Rome, Italy, the tomb of Raphael is topped with a statue of the Madonna by Lorenzetto. He is buried with Maria Bibbiena, his fiance. She died before they were able to get married, much to Raphael's preference. Maria Bibbiena was the neice of Cardinal Medici Bibbiena, and the cardinal convinced Raphael to propose. Raphael and Maria did not love each other. It was Raphael's request to be buried in the Pantheon.

Christ Falling on the Way to Calvary

Christ Falling of the Way to Calvary is a painting of Christ carrying the cross to his crucifixion with his mother, the Virgin Mary swooning with sadness and devotion in the foreground. This was a panel commissioned by a monastery in Palermo, Italy. Raphael painted it in Rome, and it was shipped by sea to the monastery. While at sea, a great storm hit, and the ship sank, and all of the crew drowned. The crate carrying the painting floated to the shores of Genoa, perfectly intact. This was seen as a sign that God was protecting Raphael's work by ensuring that the painting made it safely through the rough seas to it's new home. Monks and citizens alike flocked to see it in its divine glory.

This painting is considered atypical for Raphael. During this time in his life he was studying the works of Leonardo Da Vinci, and Da Vinci's influence can be seen in this portrait of a Florentine banker. The stark contrast between light and dark and the graceful figure of Altoviti is almost feminine-like, unusual for Raphael.

The School of Athens is possibly Raphael's most famous work, depicting the greats of Ancient Greece, or possibly the greats of the Renaissance. A figure of Heraclitus is speculated to be an image of Michelangelo; An image of Plato is suspected to be of Lenoardo Da Vinci; An image of Apelles may actually be a self-portrait of Raphael. This fresco masterpiece depicts the most famous men from different periods in Ancient Greece all gathered together.

Self-Portrait with a Friend

Self-Portrait with a Friend (also known as Double Portrait) is a painting by Raphael depicting two men, with one sitting looking towards the other behind him, and holding the hilt of a sword. The man in the back is looking not at the other, but forward. There is no certainty of who the men may be, but the man on the left is widely considered to be a self-portrait of Raphael. The painting was not titled, so there is much speculation of the identity of the pair. The man in front may be one of Raphael's close friends, or his fencing master, due to him holding the hilt of a sword.
