1849: Harriet Tubman escapes to Philadelphia

Tubman encountered the Underground Railroad when escaping slavery from Maryland. Soon thereafter she became a ‘conductor’, safely leading family and friends to free northern states.

1850:The Fugitive Slave Act

It was a federal law, it made it so that slave owners could reclaim their slaves and it hurt those who helped slaves.

1852:Uncle Tom’s Cabin is published

Its a book published by Harriet Beecher Stowe, it is a story of a fictional slave and their struggles, as well as their travels through the underground railroad.

1854:Kansas-Nebraska Act

It was a bill that Senator Stephen Douglass had presented that would organize the Nebraska territory. In doing so it had messed up the Missouri Compromise.

1857:Dred Scott Decision

1858:Abraham Lincoln debates Stephen Douglas

1859:John Brown attacks Harper’s Ferry

1860:Abraham Lincoln is elected president

1860:South Carolina secedes from the Union
