Significance: I chose this event because it socially made the division between Northern and Southern societies deepen over slavery. It socially made many Southerners see Lincoln's victory as a threat to them and their life to greater sectional division between free and slave states. Religiously, many abolitionists saw Lincoln's election as a victory against slavery, making them believe it corresponded with religious ideas of equality and freedom.

March 3, 1820, The Missouri Compromise

Significance: I chose this event because it tried to balance power between free and slave states, showing how divided the nation was over slavery. I think it was political because it kept some peace by having Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. I also think it was intellectual because it showed how leaders struggled to find compromises to keep the Union together.

Significance: I chose this event because it let people allow for themselves whether to allow slavery through popular sovereignty. I would say this is political because the Missouri Compromise was allowed and then it was eventually canceled and it increased the tension between the North and South. It also socially led to the violent outburst in "Bleeding Kansas" which showed how deeply the country was divided over slavery.

July 1, 1863-July 3, 1863, Battle of Gettysburg

Significance: I chose this event because it stopped the Confederate, Robert E. Lee's attempt to invade the North. Socially, the huge number of life's that had been taken showed how serious the war really was and made the Northern more eager to win. Economically, the South's loss of the battle lost soldiers, supplies, and money that couldn't easily be replaced. It also made it harder for the South to get goods that they needed for the war.

1861-1865, The Railroad

Significance: I chose this event because the railroads helped move troops, weapons, and supplies quickly. Economically, the North's railroads had a big advantage allowing factories to send goods and soldiers to battle faster than the South could. The railroad also had a political impact by helping connect people and spread news about the war, giving opinions, support, and strategies.

Significance: I chose this event because it was created to help enslaved people to have freedom after the Civil War. Socially, the Freemen's Bureau built schools, provided food, helped families reunite and gave them land to make a living which helped improve the life's of many African Americans. It was also intellectual because it helped spread knowledge and education between enslaved people. Many of school were built which gave many African Americans the first chance to learn, read, and write.

1865-1877, Ku Klux Klan (Failure)

Significance: The Ku Klux Klan were against Reconstruction and the rights of newly freed Black people, in which they used violence and intimidation. This event was political because it tried to control the government and elections by using fear and violence. They targeted anyone who supported the idea and laws of Reconstruction, attacking them or threatening them to keep them from voting. Economically, they prevented black people from getting fair jobs and owning land by using fear. They scared workers and farmers to keep them working for little pay which led to black families being poor.

Significance: I chose this event because it showed how the South kept power over the freed African American slaves even after slavery was ended. This is economic because since many freed African Americans didn't have or own land, so they would have to work for white landowners. These white landowners forced the freed African Americans into sharecropping or unfair labor, which led them into debt and poverty. This is also political because it showed how white leaders in the South used government and law power such a as Black Codes, which limited where black people can work, live, and travel. They used these powers to maintain control over African American's economic life.
