In these two chapters, Doctor Thorne learns that his niece's other uncle, Roger Scatcherd, has made him the executor of his estate. Inside of his will he has stipulated that if something should happen to his son, his only heir, then the bulk of his estate, which includes $200K, will go to his sister's first born child, which just so happens to be Doctor Thorne's niece Mary. Doctor Thorne spends the bulk of the remaining chapters going back and forth debating on whether he should tell Roger about this development.

The way Trollope continues to add dimension to the story through multiple plot lines always impresses me, but this one in particular I was surprised by. I knew that Mary would need to inherit in some way so that she could be with her obvious future man, Frank Gresham the younger, but I truly did not know how it was going to happen. I am curious to know if Roger Scatcherd, her unknown uncle, will come to be known to her or if he will die before she or Doctor Thorne can make him aware of the situation.

In chapters 1 and 2, we meet the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge. He hates christmas and works at an estate business. He used to have a business partner named, Jacob Marley. He passed away and now Scrooge works alone. Scrooger doesn't like christmas and doesn't like when people are merry during these times either. He doesn't want to give to the homeless or let his other workers have a day off on christmas.

Scrooge got off of work and went to have dinner at his usual. After that he went home to prepare himself for bed. As he was coming to his front door, he saw his old partner's face. He was confused because his partner passed away years ago. He walked inside and searched his house for anyone and found no one. He sat down on his sofa and then heard bells ringing and then saw the ghost of his dead partner, Jacob Marley. Jacob told him how he can still save his fate if he just listens to the three ghosts that visit him. The first visited him during the night and took him back to his past and previous christmas's. He was able to look back on how happy he was and how certain people affected him today. He saw when his greed and worry started to appear. He saw at what could have been his family. A wife and lots of kids. It made Scrooge very upset and he wanted the ghost to take him back home.

I think I would be in shock if I saw the ghost of an old friend of mine in my living room. But despite all the scariness, I do think it was necessary for Scrooge to become scared because I think that really brought his attention to the situation. If it were me, I would listen to every word the ghost told me. I also think it is very considerate of his ghostly friend, Marley, to come back and help him change his fate before it is too late.

Scrooge was visited by the ghost of the present. The spirit took him to lots of peoples houses where they were celebrating christmas with their family and friends. Scrooge was very eager to leave with the spirit so that it could help him more. The spirit took him to some of his workers and saw how everyone made a toast to Scrooge and talked about how Scrooge was so greedy and grumpy. It made Scrooge happy and excited to see everyone having fun. He learned about how he needs to give back to the people who need the most help. The spirit brought him back to his apartment and left.

Scrooge finally meets the ghost of the future yet to come. The spirit doesn't talk at all but takes Scrooge to the scenes where he needs to be. Scrooge sees people going to sell some items that are in bags. The people said they stole them from a man who had recently passed away. They talked about how the man never did anyone good and was very greedy. Scrooge soon moved with the spirit to the bed of his dead body but he didn't want to lift up the sheet to see himself. Scrooge wanted to see if someone out there showed some grief towards his death. The spirit took him to see his nephew and his nephew was upset about his death and that they were probably gonna be in debt. Next Scrooge went to Bob Cratchit's to see that he was upset that his son, Tiny Tim, passed away. Scrooge realized that he could have helped the people in need, like Tiny Tim, earlier i life since he had plenty of money. The spirit then took Scrooge to a dirty graveyard to show him a grave with his name on it. Scrooge was scared and sad that he was the grouchy man that died. He wanted the spirit to tell him if this future is what is supposed to happen or if it could happen?

The ghost managed to all see him in one night and the next day would be christmas day. Scrooge was so happy to be home and given a second chance. He was just putting out laughter and happiness into the world. He was talking to a boy outside his window and Scrooge told him to go and buy the big turkey at the deli. He told the boy he would pay for it and the cab needed to get it to Bob Cratchit´s house. He went for a morning walk and smiled at everyone he saw. He stopped the gentlemen who asked him to donate to the needy earlier and he finally donated. He then went to church and then to his nephew´s for dinner.
