Step 1: Somme

The Battle of Somme was the first WWI battle to use tanks and also helped Britain gain valuable experience. Even though the Allies didn't win this battle, it is seen that later on, the experience learned from this battle would help them win on the Western Front.

Step 2: Battle of Verdun February 1916 - July 1916

The battle took place in Verdun, France. The Germans were on the offensive against the French. German General Erich von Falkenhayn attacked Verdun knowing the French are going to try and defending it. Germans during the battle used Artillery to takeout french forts. Both sides used machine guns and small arms. The death toll for each side was about 400,000 each. French "won" because they were able to repel the Germans near the end of the battle. This would help the french during the Battle of the Somme.

Step 3: Charles Whittlesey

Whittlesey launched a carrier pigeon and managed to stop the barrage of friendly fire. The Americans were later offered a chance to surrender, but Whittlesey held his ground and fought on against increasingly grim odds.
