The North would help the runaway slaves cross the border into the free slave states. The North did not like this act and it increased the conflict between North and South. Some of the major differences between the two were issues over slavery and the states' rights. Northerners believed that the South just lived off of slavery and they were all horrible humans who find enjoyment out of other's misery. For this main reason is why many Northerners didn't approve of slavery.
