Due to the high degree of industrialization in China, air pollution has become a long-term and intricate environmental problem in China (Li, 2019). Since media are playing an increasingly pivotal role in dealing with climate and environmental issues in China (Tilt & Xiao, 2010), it is essential to study how news outlets report on climate change and environmental pollution in China. After a review of relevant literature, it is found that most of the studies focus on revealing how the media of a single country reports on climate and environmental issues in China, and these studies rarely involve deep factors such as the ideology and power relations. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth critical discourse analysis of media reports from different countries.

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) enables researchers to reveal the relationship between language, ideology and power (Fairclough, 1989). Based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, this study conducts a critical discourse analysis of six news reports about China’s climate and environmental issues from the New York Times and China Daily. The critical discourse analysis of this study is carried out from three dimensions: “text”, “discursive practice”, and “social practice”.

Firstly, when describing events related to climate and environmental issues in China, the New York Times tends to use negative words, while China Daily is prone to use objective and positive words. (from the dimension of text)

Secondly, the news sources of the New York Times are more diversified, while the news sources of China Daily all come from government departments and scientific research institutions. Both the New York Times and China Daily utilize a combination of direct and indirect quotations in their reports, but they have embedded corresponding ideologies in their indirect quotations. (from the dimension of discursive practice)

Thirdly, the news reports from the New York Times and China Daily incorporate different ideologies and reveal some power relations. The news reports from the New York Times reflect the political goal of the United States to maintain its hegemony and suppress China, while the news reports from China Daily focus on expressing China’s positive attitude towards solving its own climate and environmental problems. (from the dimension of social practice)

In conclusion, based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, this study conducts a critical discourse analysis of six news reports about climate and environmental issues in China from the New York Times and China Daily, and reveals the relationship between language, ideology and power from the dimensions of “text”, “discursive practice” and “social practice”. In addition, this study suggests that readers should have critical thinking when reading news reports, so as not to be misled by the ideology and power relations hidden behind the language.
