This story is told in first person view from the older brother's position. In the story their are two brothers and one is 13 and the other is 5.The older brother called his brother doodle because the little brother could only crawl and not walk, and when he crawled, he looked like a doodlebug. The older brother decide to dedicate his time into teaching Doodle to walk instead of crawl. Doodles's brother was desperate to help Doodle walk and then one day, Doodle finally walked. A couple of months passed and Doodle walked better, and the older brother wanted to teach more to Doodle. Doodle ended up failing the plan but Doodles brother pushed him more, so they continued. On a Saturday noon before school, The whole family (Doodle, Doodle's Mom, Doodle's Dad, Doodle's older brother) were eating lunch when suddenly there was a strange croak. Doodle slipped into the yard and looked up above the bleeding tree to see a big red bird. The bird was to be described as the size of a chicken with scarlet feathers and long legs. The bird began to flutter and then fell with a thump to the ground and was dead. The bird was a scarlet ibis and Doodle buried him. When Doodle finished eating, Doodle and his brother hurried to swimming place called Horse head landing, where Doodle was going to practice swimming. But when they got there lightning was flashing and Doodle was tired so they started home to try to beat the storm. They began to walk but ran in a panic, then when the rain came it knocked over a gum tree and hit Doodle. Doodle cried out to his brother, but Doodle's brother ran, for his cruelty had awakened. Then the wind slowed down and Doodle's older brother went back to find him under a red nightshade bush sitting in the ground with his face buried into his arms. Doodle's older brother talked but doodle didn't answer as he lifted Doodles head and Doodle just fell on the ground bleeding from his mouth and his neck. He's the Antagonist in the story because he doesn't want to do what his brother wants him to do and is slightly against him in a part of the story. Doodle is a 5 year old kid that couldn't walk in the beginning of the story but is a progressive character through out it.In lines 27 to 30, the author describes how Doodle is tired and doesn't want to do the learning anymore. On line 27, the narrator describes what's happening in that moment when he says"But Doodle couldn't keep up with the plan. In the beginning, Doodle's older brother was very awkward about hi brother and how he was embarrassed of his brother not being able to walk at the age of 5.
