Having the opportunity to shadow such a brilliant teacher was amazing. Having firsthand experience of what a classroom environment is like and all the challenges teachers face has given me the opportunity to put myself in that situation and asses how I would address the problem. Shadowing taught me that not all students react to the same teaching techniques. By watching the students, I could identify which ones were more visual or auditory learners. I also learned what the benefits of using a computer for most of the work in class are and realized it is so much better. Dr. Anderson would create notes and the students would be responsible for highlighting, circling and underlining the key information as well as posing questions they had and having to research to answer them. That is a great thing because it forces students to truly look at the information they are learning that particular week. While shadowing Dr.Anderson I got to also shadow other science and math sixth grade teachers. Seeing how different they teach and how they manage their classroom allowed me to see how different their teaching philosophies were. Although teaching the same information there was a huge difference from one science teacher to another. All the teachers I had the pleasure of meeting and shadowing gave me really good tips and advice on things I can do to effectively manage a classroom and teach. When it came to present my project to the students I was so nervous they would reject it but they were awesome. Most students completed my puzzle and were happy to do it (I’m guessing because I promised them a treat if they got an A). There were many students that didn't speak English very well and I got the opportunity to teach them the same things Dr.Anderson was going over with the rest of the class. These kids regardless of their lack of understanding the language were so attentive and did their best to follow along with the English lesson and only stopping when they had a question. All the little experiences I had in the brief time I spent at Westridge Middle have made me fall in love with the idea of teaching all over again. I think this was the best way to solidify my goals and to keep working hard to achieve them. Teaching is such a rewarding career and I cannot wait to start.
