Quote from the book: "I told you to put her human characteristics on the left; her animal ones on the right. And don’t forget to line them up.”

The book itself talks about the many ways African Americans were treated with dehumanizing actions. This quote derives from the subject of Sethe's assault done by the nephew of the schoolteacher and correlates with Jorja Smith's single "By Any Means" released after the Black Lives Matter movement to speak on the many injustices that remain in the world. The song tells a story that makes a connection with the quote from Beloved specifically, "White Men can't jump but at least they can run." White men used to get away with things because that was the societal standard that they knew everything; unfortunately, they still get away with things. This sentiment derives from George Floyd's murderer: Derek Chauvin after multiple signals that George could not breathe he decided to keep his knee to his neck and not resort to another method to detain him. Sethe's assault in the story was looked over by white males and the general white public because there was "no such thing" as abuse towards African Americans. The hurt of the many souls that were lost is still around to this day and this is why this song connects with Sethe and in general to all of those 15 million (and more) men and women who had words to speak their minds yet no voice.
