One of them being Athens.
The Athenians were the most involved and later over through the monarchy. It was a direct democracy that consisted of men of the age of 18. The democracy made public law and decisions. People apart of the democracy were chosen randomly over the year.
Athens showed success with direct democracy.

The Roman Empire started very similarly to how Athens started. They were originally a monarchy, but the monarchy was overthrown and the new government was referred to as the republic.
It involved two social classes one being the rich and the other being the common folk. They held elections but women, enslaved, and non-foreign folk could not participate. The government was centered in the Senate and involved around 300 members.
The Roman Empire government was deemed extremely successful. America has even based many things on their government from the Roman Empire.

When the Roman Empire's government system crashed they started the idea of feudalism.
Feudalism was loosely organized and it was ruled by lords. The richer the lord was the more power they had. It was an agreement that the town folk just had to worship them and they would keep their lands organized. The majority of the population was at the bottom of the chain. They were considered peasants.
The peasants were treated very unwell which caused many of them to die young. This made this type of government less successful
