Harper Lee shows innocence in Tom's character by having all evidence point toward him not being guilty and having him still be seen as guilty for raping Mayella Ewell. This example shows Tom Robinson actually not gaining or losing any innocence. While it's likely that Tom didn't do anything against the law, his public imagery is shown to lose innocence. The readers don't know for sure what happened so, with a lack of actions to base it on, Tom just stays normal.

Harper Lee shows innocence by having a mystery surround his innocence with evidence to point to either a gain or lose of innocence. Rumors created by neighborhood show Boo as being a person who slowly lost innocence. Even though this happens, events throughout the story would say otherwise. Events such as Scout finding gum in a tree outside of the Radley household. Now with no action to show him doing that, we can't be certain that he is innocent. Boo finally makes his grand reveal in chapter 30, as he kills Bob Ewell, father to Mayella, who was attacking Scout and Jem on their way home. This event shows that he is somewhat innocent. Even though he killed a man, it was an accident as Boo was fighting Bob off from the kids and he fell on his knife. Boo did cause his death, but with good intentions.

Harper Lee shows innocence through the trial because Tom is being falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus is trying to state out the obvious by asking bob if he was left handed. This creates some sort of conflict because bob doesn't want to be called out for lying. This shows innocence because Atticus knows that tom is innocent but he cant find a way to prove it. Tom is innocent because he lives in a time period where all Negroes are despised. He did nothing to Mayella Ewell but he is getting the punishment.

Quote: "Mr. Ewell could have beaten up Mayella." "If her right eye was blacked and she was beaten mostly on her right side of the face, it would tend to show that a left hand person did it."

Harper Lee shows innocence by making Boos character always be surrounded by mystery. In the story when Miss Stephanie Crawford told the story of when Boo supposedly stabbed his father with scissors. When Jem and Scout hear this they have no choice of believing it or not because they have never met Boo. Also, at the end of the story w hen boo kills bob ewell but had a solid, good reason. To protect Jem and Scout. Sheriff Tate had already known they boo killed him but didn't lock him up because he had a life saving reason.

Quote: " Bob Ewell fell on his knife. He killed himself."
